Cruisers ! It’s been awhile and I’m in need of a complete exhaust from front to back, Cruiser Dan had great prices but I hear he’s retired. Anyone else doing these great prices like CD use to have?

Back in the day on my old LX I got played on an EMS exhaust because nobody wanted to speak up when it was happening and they were still taking orders as normal.

My advice would be to simply find a good local muffler shop with guys who care and know what they are doing, ask them to fab something up for you. I wish I had done that instead of trying to get cute with some supposedly special exhaust…

I just ordered a Borla muffler (cutting off resonator), and Magnuson cats off Summit (CA legal), O2 sensor kit from Wits End, and all OEM hardware, hangers, etc from Roseville Toyota (Their website has wholesale pricing).

I second finding a reliable exhaust shop, and having them build something in stainless. If you have any high end custom auto places in your area, ask them where they go for exhaust work on their customers' cars.

What year is your Cruiser? That makes a difference. Lots of options if it's 95-97.

What state you in?

If not Cali, are you thinking SS or no?

Aftermarket more your thing, or are you trying to stay strictly OE-styled parts?

Otherwise you’ll get as many replies as there are muffler manufacturers…..:hillbilly:

You can still get the factory exhaust. It's expensive as fawk, mine made it to about 300K before really needing any work. At 340k I'm still running the stock center muffler section, although the resonator rusted away and cats failed around 300k.

Bosal exhaust is crap, JMO. Been there done that. Borla has a SS exhaust system that looks pretty good quality and not terribly expensive, but louder, which is not my thing. Not sure if OTRAMM is still making his stainless exhaust. It's about on par with OEM in price, but a step up in quality.

Local exhaust shop really is the best bang/$ option as long as you've got a good one near you.

I recently swapped mine out and so far have really liked the result. Feels just slightly louder than OEM and no cabin drone at all.

Below is a list of parts I bought.

Install went smoothly for me (luckily because the OEM exhaust was starting to fall apart):
- Y-pipe and front cat converter: Magnaflow - MAG-23120 - bought this from truck & gear
- Rear cat converter - bought this from amazon: MagnaFlow Direct-Fit Catalytic Converter HM Grade Federal/EPA Compliant 55320 - Stainless Steel, 11.5in Overall Length, Bolt-On Inlet Attachment, Mounting Hardware Included - SUV HM Replacement
- bosal mid muffler: 228-241 Bosal
- bosal tail pipe: 228-243 Bosal
- O-Sensors: Denso 234-4153 Oxygen Sensor and Denso 234-4157 Oxygen Sensor (Air and Fuel Ratio Sensor)
- Wit's end exhaust manifold downpipe kit
- stainless steel hardware from local store to hold everything together

if you're close to Houston , Ripley's can mandrel bend and weld anything up you need... in SS or aluminized. I had them quote my last 80 and back 8 years ago it was roughly 1400. They did a friends 570 catback recently with burns muffler and it sounds great and he says no droning or clunks.....

I'm doing a full OEM exhaust replacement from block to the exhaust tail.

I'm very conflicted regarding this topic. 100% OEM replacement = $$$$ but longevity. A partial oem plus whatever else lessens the $$ but what does it do to longevity?
The Borla catback is something like $1100 so doing that section as oem is now cheaper. I've deleted pair and moved my o2 sensors. In theory, that should open up some options for me, but only seems to open up the cat section a bit. I don't know which direction to go.

Shiny!!

That's cool. Surprising it's all still available.

Not the route I would go, but you'll probably never need to replace it

Not sure where you are, but if In SoCal I can give you the exhaust guy I used. When I took the LC to the local gurus here in San Diego they said they couldn’t believe how nice my system was. Apparently they see some serious hack jobs… paid 1500 cash for full cat back. Not sure if that’s a good price, but it was worth it to me to stop the damn rattles!

So,
Toyota 17401-66090 $1400 or so depending upon source. (I search 95' model year due to my o2 sensor re-locate)
Magnaflow 447103 seems to be running $1k unless there's a coupon in play. (this is the CARB part)
Toyota 18450-66120 second cat $530 ish
Magnaflow 447217 also second or rear cat $555 give or take coupon status (Also carb)
Toyota 17403-66041 $497 magnaflow doesn't offer an equivalent part for this unless I am horrible at the google, so this is where we switch over to Bosal, Borla, whatever.
Toyota 17405-66010 $268 A custom shop could easily handle this section I'm sure.

Non-Carb compliant opens some room in the wallet a bit and we get back to part numbers I've seen throughout the threads more often:
Magnaflow 23120 $657
Magnaflow 23622 $389

Borla 14590 $1100 4wheelparts.

I just found a random site that has the Magnaflow 23120 for under $500. I'm going to do a bit of search and see if there are any customer reviews, and I may be the guinea pig.

Does anyone know if there are still "crappy" 23120 floating around?

I also realize I'm "leaving out" some money in gaskets and hangers.

Is it worth it to change out manifolds as well? Are they prone to getting gunked up with carbon, etc deposits? Do we need the huge muffler on our rigs? Whenever I'm under the truck, that thing seems needlessly huge but there must be a method to the madness. Were there any Toyota part "interchange" smaller mufflers that made sense? (which then kicks me back into custom work).

I pulled the trigger on 2 Magnaflow parts. Hottexhaust.com has 20% off. #23120 plus 1 cat shipped for $836. In theory I could drop to only the single cat since WA is no longer checking emissions but I thought I would keep things semi-legit underneath.
The other site I mentioned was Autopartskart. It had 1 pretty horrible review. There were not really any details, but I didn't want to chance it.

This is the way...
I'm happy I did this

OEM is the only option for me.
  • My og setup (24 years, 283K miles) has given me zero probs save for 1 of the 3 exhaust hangers
  • I don't like aftermarket parts touching my 80 outside of lift and tires
  • I live in CA which requires a smog check every 2 years
  • Of least importance, should I ever sell, I want to retain the Republic of CA buying market aka the 5th largest economy in the world ahead of India and just behind Germany
If I didn't take adv of that insane Toyota promo, I prob would've carried on with my ugly, but trusty og exhaust system until it needed attn.

In case this helps, the big metal parts (exhaust front, cat, center, tail) cost $2184. Every bit of the gaskets, bolts and hangers to put it together cost $368. If you include the two manifolds and sundry bits, they cost $343. Shipping it all (not inconsequential AL to CA) was a whopping $138. No sales tax. 100% confidence everything will work. Priceless.

Had I gone through my reg OEM channels, it would've been AT LEAST $1K more because I was contemplating pulling the trigg at my local dealership that matches the best USA online Toyota dealership prices (e.g. Boch Toyota).

No fuqn brainer in my case. I had no choice, but to place the order. Good job, Toyota USA. Thx.

Yup, I should have ordered a few things during that silly sale. Oh well.
