I've done this four times now. Everyone on mud says the gas stations are ripping me off. Walmart, shell, marathon, and BP. I guess they all are ripping me off.

Call and report them to Ur State dept of agriculture.

litres? ;)

I generally run it until it's close to 'E' or the light comes on, virtually always takes 20 gallons. No way the tank holds 28, so unless your truck is special, you're getting ripped.

Lol. You guys are killing me. I have done this several times. At different stations, different states. They aren't ripping me off. I'm squeezing in that many gallons. Today when pulling up to the pump I was running on fumes. Truck was shutting off as I made the turn into the gas station. Don't make it a habit to run that low but miscalculated today. Filled it up and topped off, and that was a photo of my pump.

As for gas at less than $2? What do you mean "how"? that's the price. Last week this is what I paid:

Very interesting. The owner's manual says 25.4 (US) gallons and 28.6 is around 11% more. Since Toyota measured it to the nearest 1/10 of a gallon, there is no way they would be off by that much. Assuming your truck was still running when you pulled into the station (and you shut if off during fueling :)), there was still a bit in the tank too. I'm getting suspicious of pump accuracy and testing.

So do you think topping it off can't add 3 gallons? I filled it today until the fuel sloshed in the filler cup. Literally. Go ahead and flame me for topping off charcoal canister...go for it. But I keep doing this and I have a hard time believing all these stations are ripping all of us off. I'm gonna see if I can find out what the tank plus filler neck can actually hold. I know they account for expansion and add that plus the filler neck could end up being three gallons...

The only answer is that for some reason you don't have a stock gas tank. I have had three 100s and one 80. All of them are exactly the same. When the light goes on, it will fit 20 gallons. When totally, completely empty, even if you fill it so it over flows the cap, it will fit 25-something. Maybe you have one made for another country? Or someone put a different tank on? And why are you putting regular unleaded in there?

I think 9 out of 10 of us are using regular 87 octane. I run a can of Seafoam thru about once a month.

So many questions lol. Because it runs perfectly fine on 87. :) but you do make me wonder if maybe the tank is unique.....I posted a year or so ago how I overinflated my tires, didn't use a/c and hypermiled at 55mph from one gas station on the interstate to another one 600 miles away on a single tank of fuel. A bunch of people didn't believe it did it but I did. Maybe someday if I make it to a gathering someone can check my tank out and tell me what they think.

I may be in error, but by my quick and dirty calculations:

If the filler neck is 2” in diameter, it would have to be 220.59 inches long to hold 3 gallons

If the filler neck is 3” in diameter, it would have to be 98.05 inches long to hold 3 gallons

I have filled up to 27 gallons before.

I wouldn't do that in any place you expect to gain serious elevation. You'll put a lot of strain on the charcoal canister, if not likely to seep gas by static pressure into it.

I ran down until the gas light came on this weekend, put 50 more km on to get to Costco, and filled up with 79.8 Liters (21 Gallons). I think I was running down to fumes at that point. This is on my 2001 LX.

As pilot, this thread makes me crazy.... Also like jumping out a perfectly good one!

I always learned that the only time a gas gauge is accurate is when it's empty.

Mine will take 4 additional gallons after the pump clicks off.

FWIW Filled up today. 0 mile range indicated and gas light had been on for 10 miles or so. 21.4 gals till the pump clicked off. Doubt I could fit another 7.

Trunk, nope, was a complete accident on both ends. Wife and I were chatting and driving around town running errands and knew I was getting low but didn't realize with A/C on and stop and go traffic and a heavily loaded cargo area I was burning through it faster than anticipated. Then as I was filling, I always add a little more fuel but once again, was watching some people at the station interacting, kept my hand squeezing the nozzle half-way down and it didn't click off. The only way I knew it was about to overflow was cause the gurgling sound it makes as the cup is filling. I look down and immediately let go of handle and cup is full...shake the truck back and forth a couple of times and it slowly drains enough to no longer be sloshing out of cup. Anyway, I'm more interested in the actual tank capacity including expansion area (JlB, I don't think it's the neck alone that the fuel is going to FYI, it's the expansion area of the tank designed to accommodate the expansion of the fuel with increase in temperature).
