Is there a general opinion on the lifespan of the fuel pump?
I just bought an '03, 215k miles.
Do people prophylactically replace them to avoid a problem at the most inopportune time?
Thanks

I have never replaced a fuel pump in any of my toyota's. Make sure you don't run down to reserve as it can expose the pump and heat up.
I do carry an extra pump with me just in case but keep one in the tool box if you'd like. If you are replacing a pump, stick to OEM.

I bought a 2001 Sequoia with 245k miles a couple years ago as a "no run, no start". The previous owner couldn't figure it out and had bought a replacement ECU, replaced plugs and coils. No go. Hmmm. I towed it home and had it running in 45 minutes with a new fuel pump.

To me, considering that the fuel pump is one of the few things that can absolutely strand you without warning, I would consider the fuel pump as a maintenance item once the miles get up there. I don't know if or when the pump on my 342k mile '01 LC100 was replaced, and will be doing it just to be safe.
