Just took a looky at my carb, hope this helps...
I do not have anything connected where your "return" line is bolted up to your carb. Nothing, nada. I can feel the round hold where a bolt could go (as on yours), but can't tell if it's threaded, nor if there is a plug deep inside.
Your return line appears to be bolted to the carb with a banjo bolt. These allow fluid to go through them. It's possible that excess fuel from the pump is being dumped into the carb.
If it were me, I'd connect the return line where it goes, and do whatever it takes to cap off the hold in the carb where the return line is now bolted.
Also, make sure the return line is clear all the way back to the tank. I'd guess that just blowing into it would be enough to confirm it's OK. (Compressed air is much safer than blowing by mouth.)
