Fuel pump mounting

Hello Everyone.
I've researched and can't find a solid answer on this...
Have a 73 FJ 40 with a 2f engine.
PO had electric fuel pump mounted on side rail below fuel tank running Sniper EFI. Has a poly tank with the feed line coming from out the top making it not a gravity fed system. Has anyone had lasting success with this? I've already changed it once. Don't want to go through the hassle of putting an in the tank pump. Thinking of putting in a larger steel tank. Has anyone either tig welded a fitting or installed a feed fitting in the bottom of the tank with success? Appreciate any help or guidance if I missed it somewhere. Thanks.

Have you thought about installing a fuel line one way check valve between your tank and the fuel pump. It would prevent fuel from flowing back into the tank. I'd mount it as close to the tank fitting as possible, that way the line between it and fuel pump should remain full and the pump should not run dry.

In theory (theory is not always reliable) you have a siphon when gas outlet is on the top and pump is below (weight of fuel on the incline is slightly less than fuel on decline). I don’t think that is uncommon. The check valve is an idea.. I’m just not sure where the “theoretical” air is getting into the system, allowing for the column of fuel on the incline (out of the tank to the top) fall back. If that IS what is happening, causing the electric fuel pump to need to prime each time, the problem is more likely in the tank intake assembly.. if.

Inline pumps can be troublesome.

If it were me, I'd replace the poly tank with a steel one, and put the pump in the tank.

Appreciate the input everyone! I like the idea of the check valve. Going to give it a try and see how it goes.... Who knows...
