Hey All,

As I'm getting more and more comfortable taking my LX470 off the beaten path and onto some trails, I feel that the time has come to upgrade the factory tow hooks in the front to something that is suited to a recovery should I need it.

In the rear, I have a hitch mount with a D-Ring shackle, so I'm all good there....but I'm always a little nervous of getting put in a situation where I need to be recovered (or recover someone else) from the front.

I was looking at the Trail Tailor front recovery pieces, but they've been out of stock for some time now.

I'm curious if anyone has used these? Rated Recovery Points Fits a Toyota 80/100 Series Land Cruiser
If so, did they require any modification to fit with a stock bumper?

I'm also open to any other suggestions if there are some other recovery points being sold out there that i'm not aware of.

Thanks in advance!!

Fit fine, zero problems with stock bumper cover. Trail Tailor recovery points are a little cheaper, but probably not after shipping costs and paint, given the Ironmans are already painted and free shipping... Soft Shackle Tow Points - 60 80 100 Series

Thanks man! Just ordered 'em. Guess I'll find out how difficult its going to be to remove the bolts on the stock hook / tie down.

Long breaker bar or impact will run them off. Buy new bolts with washers, class 10.9, from local hardware store. Size is M14 x 1.50 x 45-50mm. Torque to 92 ft/lbs.

Post pictures when they’re installed. Curious to see how they fit

Related: these (plus trail tailors) protrude quite a bit into the "approach angle" envelope.

Opinions?

I have them installed. I don't think they will limit my approach angle at all, but then again I've still got the stock front bumper. With a high clearance bumper I imagine they might limit approach angle a bit.

I did scrape them up a bit on a (very) large rock, but it wasn't an approach angle so much as a "I beached myself" situation.

With the stock bumper is the Ironman recovery point low enough that a tow strap will not push up on the bumper while under tension? Looking at the factory tie down points, the tow strap would not clear the bumper, but there is a hook that does.

Good question. When I installed them I noticed that in the event of a recovery, it would be very likely that a snatch or tow strap AND a shackle under tension would contact the lower part of the front bumper. I don't know if it would be enough to do any damage, but it is very likely that it would contact the bumper.

I suppose with a pretty extreme angle pulling upwards it could do some damage to the bumper. Hopefully I'll never find out, but if I do....it'll be an excuse to upgrade bumpers!

Always good to have an excuse for a cool upgrade! Thanks for the insight on the bumper contact.

Took a chance on eBay that these tow points from a Nissan GU would fit and it payed off. For $80 I got some really beefy tow points with shackles. They bolted perfectly to my LX470 and put the shackles in what I think is a better position to to clear the bumper from damage and have a good pull. They are made of 3/8” iron so I think their pretty stout.

These look great. Anyone have thoughts on how strong they would be?

Can steel shackles be used on the trailtailor recovery points that are radiused for soft shackles?

You'd run the risk of gouging the smooth edge and could compromise a soft shackle if it nicks the recovery point
