Can anyone point me to photos of an early toyota 4x4 pickup with a front receiver hitch? Id like to weld in a receiver to the stock crossmember, with some extra support and gussets it looks like it should work. Just wondering what others had come up with before I begin cutting and welding.

I’ve got nothing to show yet, but I’m going to fabricate a bumper with a receiver to use as a winch mount, and possibly as a tow-bar mount for flat towing my 4Runnner. I’m going to do a 1.5” tube style wings off a plate Center section.

That sounds cool! I have an intact bumper with valance. Trying to keep it that way as long as i can, but I need a winch. So going with the receiver option.

My bumper is losing its chrome on the back, but it and the valence are otherwise good. I’m going to keep them as I want all the original parts to stay with the truck. The bumper fab project is all about making it towable behind my camper.

Have you checked to see whether Curt or Reese make a front receiver hitch for our trucks?

I'd love to see it when you're done!
Hadn't checked that yet. I have the receiver tube and a welder so I'm gonna rig up something.
I also would like to tow mine to the trails. It doesnt like highway speeds!

I just looked through my 416 page Curt catalog (2017 version) and they only list a front receiver for 07+ 4Runners and 01+ Tacomas. They do however offer a universal fit weld up hitch option that might work for you. They are rated for 15,000 so plenty strong enough, and com in a 3.125” drop (linked below) or an 11.5” drop that you could shorten if you needed more than 3.125”. It’s part number is 15902, or 15903 if it needs to be wider than 43” to mount to your frame.

Ahh. You have the start of one already... I made a hitch extension for when my camper is on, but I ended up buying a Curt one anyway as I tow clients trailers on occasion and if there is ever an accident, I don’t want my fabrication to become the catalyst for legal issues. The Curt sticker with weight ratings on it is worth the $150 to me. The receiver you have could be used to build a bracket to hold a multi mount winch in the back of the Runner as well. I plan to do that so it’s not sliding around off-road. I have a 16’ car trailer to move my 4Runner on, but I want to have the option of flat towing too, and came up with my plan fairly recently. I will try and whip something up in the next couple of months.

I'm going to keep that one in mind. I guess first thing is to just take off the bumper and see what's there!
