Getting a thread going for the recurring posts on front end grinding noise and truck not moving.
Symptoms:
grinding noise from under truck, specific to front end
truck won't move in drive or reverse, grinding noise if attempted
Likely causes:
c-clip has popped off the end of the CV shaft
axle and/or flange splines have stripped out
Temporary fix:
lock the center differential, you can drive with just this for emergency purposes, but you will cause further damage to the splines
for a longer fix, remove drive flanges, remove front drive shaft
Fix
inspect flanges and splines, replace c-clip and other parts as needed
you may be able to replace just the outer shaft portion of the CV
some have even been able to just replace the c-clip on the axle and been good to go
