Front dust shields (needed?) (1 Viewer)

Hi, I'm rebuilding the front disc brakes on my 76 FJ40 and the backing plates are totally rusted out. Are required? I spoke to a vendor and they told me that they have to be used. Cost is $399 for a pair and if they are not needed, I don't want to incur the expense.

The dust shields are "needed". I say that because the spacing they provide is necessary but the shield itself isn't needed. Marks Off Road sells backing plate eliminators for $19 a pair.

You'll also need extended brake lines to the calipers, I believe.

I have good, rust free used shields for $100 each. I also offer the eliminator plates with the extended hoses for $99 for the kit. You can VM me at the shop to follow up. Thanks.
