Hello Again Friends. This is just a note to say that I successfully installed my LX450 Front DS within 20 minutes. I test drove my LX450 tank and was so impressed with how it performed. Of course, it runs as it should have. MOST IMPORTANTLY, I have the members of this discussion thread to thank because your knowledge was great enough to help overcome the fear factor I felt in taking on such a delicate task.

I found this 14mm socket/u-joint tool at Sears to make removal/install so much easier with the stock shaft and possible with my new Dual Cardon shaft. Let's me apply proper torque for the install. I've chewed up my nuts on the inboard side using an open end wrench because the box and socket wouldn't fit. Love the new socket!

The procedure:
1-ignition on
2-put transfer case lever in L
3-observe yellow "ABS" and yellow center diff lock lights on dash
4-pull "diff" fuse in fuse box in front of your left knee. Lower-right in my fusebox, 30 amp
5-put transfer case lever in H
6-observe "ABS" and cdl lights still on

Dusting off this thread since I need clarification.

I too need to remove my front DS to replace the u joints, but also need to drive it a couple days since its my daily.

I don't have a CDL switch. When I put it into low, I hear relays clicking...but no abs or center diff lock lights on the dash pop up. Does this mean I cannot do the lock trick and I'm not able to drive around with just my rear drive shaft?

Try doing the steps as listed to lock the CDZl them drive around and do some hard turns. It the CDL is locked the rig will steer hard / heavy on hard surfaces.

OK i'll give that shot. I was just a little worried since everyone has been talking about dash lights, but I don't have any dash lights that come up when i put it into low.

I had a 98 4runner 4x4 previously and that had dash lights that popped up when i engaged 4L and 4H.

Lights could be failing. Test the CDL and if it works, then : it workz!

Ok will do. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to destroy the VC if i drive it for a few days like that. Planning on doing the fuse trick tonight and cross my fingers nothing implodes.

Just helped a friend buy an 80 with a blown up Birf. We pulled the front DS and both drive plates, locked up the CDL and drove it a couple hours on the hiway to get it home. No harm , no foul!

I made my own redneck spanner. Machined down impact socket with hi-tensile rod throught the side of the socket. Sure you can only turn it 1/6th of a turn, but it fits in what space Mr Tatton left me to workwith...

From reading Monkey boys post he says the emergency brake won't hold the truck when dropping the driveshaft. I don't see it, why not?

A functioning e-brake will hold the truck with the DS removed. Either his was not working properly or he did not set it correctly. I believe he was making the point that chocking the wheels is a good idea and that putting the vehicle in park is not sufficient when a DS is removed. If the location where you are doing the repairs is not level then chock the wheels and pull the e-brake. You'll be fine.

Thought I would dust off this thread so as to make a correction to the above quotes. Cj80cruiser was referring to a post Monkey boy had made on page one. Since this thread is in the 80 series section, I think most assumed Monkey Boy was referring to an 80 series. He was in fact referring to his FJ40. To my knowledge, most FJ40 have a different parking brake setup. An FJ40 has it's parking brake sandwiched between the transfer case and rear driveshaft. So of course, once the rear driveshaft comes off, no more parking brake. Chock those wheels folks!!!

@Dissent belated thank you for the recommendation I just dropped my DC front shaft yesterday and had to get creative. I think this item is the ticket, and I didn't yet know you could get universals with a specific socket end size. I end up moving shafts around and re-balancing so this will be a big help
