Thomas, do you zero the first time out at a distance are do you get it right up close.

I found that when I went to sighting for zero at 25 yards it is much easier to get it really right and then drop back and start shooting at distance. It really changed the accuracy of my zero. Generally any deviation at distance I can then blame on myself and not the gun.

today: get out of bed at some point. look at my 308 and think about how perfectly sighted in it is (oh snap!)

tomorrow: if out of bed yet, watch the college football national championship game. sign the petition to have nickelback removed from the halftime show at the lions/gb game

thomas....GREAT call on setting clocks back Sat night

Nolan....military always does a 25 meter first then goes out to distance
1. it's easier and involved less walking/glassing with binos or scope
2. no adverse effects from wind, big rock rotation, humidity, or drop of bullet (you can start factoring those in after you know you can hit an ant at 25) my .02 cents

First attempt was a 25 yard attempt due to a lack of space at my buddy's farm. Groups where tight, but all over the place. I'd wager that it was a combo of parralax error and inconsistent cheek weld from the idiot behind the trigger.. This is my first experience with a "scout" type EER scope, so kind of trial and error. Basically I scratched that whole operation, took scope off, moved rings, returned to factory zero and monkeyed with the position to get the eye relief right on it. I think I'll probably start at 50yds and if im on paper, move it back to 100 to elminate any potential parralax issues. I usually zero iron sights at 25 and have no problem with it. This scope just did not cooperate.

Second attempt was rained out because Turcotte closes the new rifle range at any sign of moisture ... i did wear the sporting clays course out, though.

Ha. My other .308 is fine... just decided to get something a bit more practical than a 15lb m14 just in case I decide to do any deer hunting this year.

Because your little ass can't carry it?

Y'all reminded me that my ought six is waaaaay off.

Not to worry, in your fantasy world it will hit whatever you point it at :flipoff2:

i've got a target in mind but it's not full grown yet.

what kind of scout rifle are you using? is it the savage? the .308 I hunt with is a savage precision carbine. 20" heavy contour barrel, I have a 2-7x scope on it (have thoughts about moving up to a 3-9x, but it works good enough). it took a long time for a me to find a load that it likes, it needs a boat tail 165 g or heavier. this is the kind of 3-shot groups it will do at 100 yds

my other OTHER .308 is a remington 700p. it shoots rings around the savage, but it weighs 10 lbs plus. this is a representative 3-shot group at 100 ... the low shot was off a cold bore:

I traded for one of the ruger GSR's a while back.

Ruger® Gunsite Scout Rifle Models

The scope is a Nikon Encore 2.5-8x28 EER.

I've contemplated buying one of the Steyr's on several occasions, just can't bring myself to drop the coin on one, though.

My groups were no where near that pretty.

Admittedly I have been out of ot for a while but isn't an EER scope for handguns? I use an Leupold EER on my Thompson Contender.

Nikon markets the encore as both, relief on this model is anywhere from 8" to 30" depending on magnification. At 12.5"~, I can pretty much run the full spectrum from 2.5 - 8 without having to move closer or back up. That being said, if I had it to do over again, I'd have probably gone with the Leupold 2.5x28 IER scout scope.

I would like to see how you have this set up. How do you get 8-12.5" eye relief without the scope mounted half way down the barrel?

the scope IS mounted halfway down the barrrel.

Not mine, but the exact same setup... I have my scope a little further forward than that guy does.
