I just bought an ‘85 FJ60. I tried to engage the four wheel drive for the first time and noticed the shifter is not engaged at all. It will slide right and left like it’s in neutral but will not go forward into H2 or right into L4. Since I have driven the truck several times, it seems to me that it was not in H2 (because I didn’t have to shift it “back” towards H4 before wiggling the shifter right and left). Is it possible that the prior owner made the truck full time 2wd and completely disengaged the shifter? If it’s not readily apparent, I’m not mechanically inclined at all.

The shifters get frozen or stuck in one spot if not shifted often. Best bet is to get under it and spray some penetrating/lubricating fluid at the shifter and keep trying it.

Also, check to ensure your transfer case is full of fluid.
