You can and I have twice turned the vacuum into a manual. I split the case and took the vacuum assembly off removed the selector shaft and drilled out the factory cast recessed spot for a detent ball in the front half of the case. They all have it like it was meant to be a manual

Tap the hole for a detent cap I used a brass 3/8 plug, find a appropriate ball bearing and spring. Next install the selector shaft lock it into 4wheel and mark the shaft locked and unlocked then remove and carve a grove into the shaft on your marked locked and unlocked with a grinder. There’s already a grove in the shaft for the 4wheel drive switch to copy for depth.

Then all you need the shifter boot and seal for for the front nose of the Tcase (Split case 4 wheel drive selector shaft seal 90311-22005
Split case 4 wheel drive selector shaft boot 36318-60020)
and to find the manual tcase shift arm which i did or weld and extension onto it to catch the selector shaft that already comes with the correct linkage catch even though it’s a vacuum case.

Course you can buy all the detent and the correct selector parts to swap it over from Toyota also but no need. Just like people these Tcases are all pretty much the same inside

Better than what?

As long as I'm stuck with vacuum, I'd rather have a manual switch than rely on dodgy old 24v solenoids.

I wanted to build the switch just for a fun lathe project

At some point I'll put a rebuild kit in my tcase, and maybe then convert to manual.

Next summer maybe.

I repeat myself a lot these days. What else could be better than a manual??

I've never owned a 2h, so no.

Just a remote reservoir tho isn't it? Should be similar to any Toyota remote res.
Ya I did some looking into this and your right just the fixed mounting brackets are different from one series to another meaning that if I used one off a mini truck for example the mount would have to be custom altered to use. I would like to get a stock one and use the stock mounting on the inside fender but might have to go with a different series one for now.
Thanks!

Oh hey Ryan, just bought 2 new batteries for the 60, and we are trying to figure out if its a 24 volt starter system batteries in parralell or a 12 volt system in series. I think it is 2 batteres in series for 12V but not sure, any suggestions on this? thanks!

you'll know right away!

FYI, the FJ62 may not have the mounting points for the remote PS pump reservoir-mine didn't, so I used an alternate location within reach of hoses. Same for the 24v power bus (little black box).

And just to expand on that now that I have a minute,

As far as I understand it you have an fj60 body with a 2h transplant?

Fj60s were 12v, 2h's were almost always 24v. If both of those things are still true that's gonna be a problem.

But I have no idea what's been done to the wiring of either.

Maybe the 2h was converted, but you really need to know that before putting a battery anywhere near that truck.

Thank you Ryan,
I just got a text back from Jay today, he said it is 12V so must have been converted?
Wirering is not my strong suit but we are heeding the battery warning, dont want a 60 series BBQ
Advice much appriaited.

Hey thank you so much Dan aka Rig Pig for the parts! So close now we can taste it....LOL
I know that feeling of anticipation… welding the scab plates aside, my 40 power steering conversion is almost done. I’ve even palm steered my 40 while sitting still on dry pavement. The replacement pump is in, the tensioner 95% done, and the lines just need to be reconnected.

What I hate most at this point is life getting in the way! A couple (or ten) undisturbed hours and it could be back road worthy.
