My 85 4runner has the factory automatic with that planetary t-case........i am converting to a 5 speed G52 i think....from an 84 with a 22r......i have 2 cases from 84 pickups.....both are forward shift :frown::frown:......

my plan is to use the 5 speed with a forward case behind it as my first reduction box......question is can i convert the rear case to top shift with a kit and a twin stick from trailgear and mate it to the front case with an adapter?

Ive been told

1. Yes no problem
2. Yes but you need a top shift reduction housing
3. forget about it

somewhere in between 1,2,and 3 lies the truth but i dont know and dont wanna just tear everything apart to find out

Thanx for the help!!

I used a forward shift for my second case but I had to do the top shift conversion. I didn't think the top shift conversion was that tough. I think the hardest part of the whole dual case set up was getting the bearing off the old mane shaft to put on the new one. I used a bearing splitter and shims without a press, presses scare me. Marlin has exellent install instructions, I used them.
I got my dual case addaptor from Marlin but I got the top shift conversion from Trail Gear. The only problem I had was, when I was hammering in a roll pin the shift rod broke right at the notch for a detent ball. I sent it back to TG and they sent me a new one.
Hopefully my rambling helps Rob.

If you can cut and weld then you don't need any kit to convert a forward shift to top shift... Just some patience...

G52 (From behind a 22R engine) to a stock forward shift Transfer case to a Dual case adapter, to a top shift transfer case.

IE, yes, your plan is fine. Except the Trail Gear part....

remember when we talked on the fun this was my issue. Yea, pull the 4 wheel drive shifter out of the old tranny, make a cover for the hole and do the rest. Its best if you can use the newer 5 speed cause the 84 tranny is a bit longer with the combo but it will work just the same.

Thanx alot everybody!

sorry for the swear word.......T____G____.....lol

How did the window and wiper motor work out Jerod?

I was thinking of doing something similart too. I saw the Marlin duel case adapter on sale and it got me thinking.

I was hoping of doing the same thing. Using my stock w56 tranny (22re) and forward shifting transfercase (standard cab pickup) in front in it's stock location and then mounting the second top shifter case behind it.

I still need to look into it a bit more but am hoping this set up will work.

You can convert a forward shift transfer case to top shift.

Might want to look at this and get some ideas: Triple Sticks, move the shifters forward. If you had twin sticks on the rear transfer case I can easily see how to link them forward. It is just rods, levers, and mounting points.

That is a cool link and idea, I will have to look more into that.

I was originally going to try to use my stock forward shift box where it is and put a top shift unit behind it for the transfer case.

Guess I need to call Marlin.
