I side Keith as far as the potential earnings go on a vw diesel.
I did the same with my jetta. Yes I had to spend about $3k in maintenance over 150k miles but with mileage reimbursement I earned about $7k above all my expenses including the purchase.
If you are racking up the miles then I would not want a newer car though, Just a cheap one that gets really good mileage.
P.S. I would not listen to Zack, he has a long history of making terrible decisions when it comes to vehicles.
Yeah, I hear ya on the "cheap that gets good mileage" which is where the golf came in. I really enjoy driving it too. In the 2dr with a 6 speed, that little torquey 140hp bastard will scoot around. It's quick. Unfortunately the "occasional driver" from "daily driver" insurance difference on the cruiser wasn't very good. Also, we don't really have space for three cars. Dunno. I'm not 100% set on an Outback. That's just the top in the running right now. Once I sell the cruiser I may drive the golf for a while longer while I keep considering options.
