Foaming power steering pump. Still.....

Tools r us.... That post was great. I added a bit of gray rtv around the base during the last go round with this. I also cleaned the reservoir screen to the best of a can of brake Cleans ability. It was not very dirty.

I will flush the ATF and go with Gm fluid. I read before that was a no no, if y say it will work, I am pretty sure it will solve my cavitation problem. I'll post back ASAP, but I have to work the Bloomsburg fair this week at my family stand...

Thanks everyone.... Very awesome mud community. Love it.

Let us know if this fixes it? I am fighting a whine noise on first start up, and trying to determine if its leak or something else. I will as well use power steering fluid. Thanks

Searching for some place to get Mobil DTE light for my PS reservoir and I see only gallons for sale.
(I'm a little low from a leak in the seals which I'm surprised lasted 170k miles.)

I want to run down to the parts store and get power steering fluid listed for earlier GM vehicles. Everybody sells PS fluid. Can you guys point me to the best fluid to add?
Many thanks.

It's taken me a while to get to this.. Too many irons in the fire and too many extra cars....;)

So you think regular old light hydraulic fluid would be better? As in 32w light oil? I'm gonna pick this up tomorrow and have at it. I always have hydraulic fluid here, but only heavy 46w. I have no leaks right now with ATF, so we will see how it goes for the foaming and the original box with 205k. Crossing my fingers!

I picked up some power steering fluid from Advance auto parts. Found the GM fluid easy enough. I was in a bit of a hurry and poured the stupid tin cover from the bottle into the unit. Great!

I finally found a ps fluid that is light but works well.... And it was sitting on my shell in the garage. :). Pentosin for European cars is half the weight of ATF and works great. Had it here for my audis and never even thought about it till i saw it on Bobstheoilguy.com. No noise and as of yet and no foam. We'll see!

Curious if this ultimately took care of your issues? I'm having identical issues, but at lower temps....35 or below. Noisy pump and frothy fluid until things warm up.

resurrecting old thread!!
I am having the exact same problem here. I am not losing fluid. The reservoir is Full.
But, I'm getting foam, and the pump makes a whining sound when engine is warming up.
This is also a problem mostly when it's cold.

Gets cold, my PSP (power steering pump), foams up, starts cavitating and whining.
I'm already using Lucas power steering additive.
(maybe its too thick in the cold, adding to the cavitation problem, I don't know?)

Reservoir is Full

How is the power steering boost?

Is there an air leak or obstruction on the suction side?

Cavitation is typically caused by the introduction of air somewhere along the input. Just ask any Honda Pilot owner.

I had the same issue and it was the o-ring on the input fitting. It was also exacerbated by having a raised system pressure.

So the clamps on the 5/8” line, the line itself, and that o-ring are e biggest suspects. I would start there.

Dump the fluid and replace with AC Delco ps fluid, theres an arctic version as well if you’re some place real cold.

Thanks Everyone, (pin,rich,&max)
I’ll check out all those suggestions.
I was told by Mudrak to only use ATF in the PS reservoir.
So is the AC Delco fluid similar to ATF?
This

Well, I’m gonna disagree with that. I mean its similar to ATF in the sense that its similar to hyd fluid.

Fwiw, PSC used to reccomend this fluid for all their pumps and boxes, and Howe still does. They now reccomend swepco 715. Do your own research but the Toyota box/pump will be happy with it and its solved cavitation issues for others. I run it with my box and a PSC ‘p’ pump. My buddy runs it in a psc yota pump.

I’m not saying you don’t have another issue but if you exhaust all options I think this fluid will help.

Keep in mind youd wanna flush until you got all the pink out, its a clear fluid, and it is more expensive than ATF by far. I want to say its about 11/qt. The Swepco would be another good option and I think it’s like 10$/qt.
