I just bought a '95 4Runner with 119K on it. The speedo didnt work on the test drive, but everything else runs and shifts fine. Yesterday the o/d off light began flashing. Is there a link between the non-working speedo and the flashing light? I had planned to flush the tranny since I didnt have any service records from the PO concerning it. What else should I be looking for? This is my first automatic Toyota.
Thanks for the help.

Flashing OD light means there's a problem with the trans. Check the FAQ for the 93 FSM and it will tell you how to retrieve the code. The speedo could be the problem.... but it's more likely that there's a bad wire or speed sensor somewhere.

If the tranny isn't getting a speed indication, which is does from the speedo, then that will most certainly cause a problem.

Is the tranny shifting through all the gears and the TC locking up ?

I had the same problem....I have a mechanical speedometer...I burned up 2 transmissions.....the speedo, speed sensor and trany are linked.....if the speedo doesn't work the lockup signal doesn't get to the trany.....thus the trany will overheat......I must say this happened to me on the freeway......i'm not sure if you will get the same catastrophic result driving in the city....two different dealers weren't aware of this......

*Again, a mechanical speedo does not have any affect on an automatic transmission. As jerrod re-stated in this thread, the speed sensor is what talks to the ECM and Transmission ECU. Trust me here, unless the right side tailshaft of your truck has an electrical output for your speedometer, it doesn't talk, it spins a cable going up to your speedometer. The speed sensor is a completely different unit in and of itself.
