So one of the previous owners chopped the original radio plug off to fit an aftermarket head unit. Luckily, it looks like it has been cut at the very end, so I should be able to source the correct plug. I plan to crimp the connections on so it all looks factory.

Are the plug's housing and pins still available, or do I need to source them from a wrecker?

Part numbers and photos would be a big help. Thanks.

The original connector will have been a 10 pole female connector, part number 90980-10997. If the car has rear speakers, there will also have been a six pole female connector 90980-10998. Both are still available from Toyota.

The terminals are 2.3(II) size and are available from Yazaki through a supplier. You can also buy high quality reproduction terminals from Aliexpress. I bought 50 pcs for a couple of dollars.

Let me know if you need to decode wire colours, but there are plenty of pinout diagrams online.

Thankyou, I thought Toyota would have used a universal connector through out there vehicles so I prepared for it. The last time I was at the wreckers i cut off the radio harness from another Toyota at the wreckers.

I counted 12 wires in the FJ73 so looks like the car originally had the 6 pin connector for the rear speakers.

I will order some terminals from aliexpress.

I have a brain seizure whenever I see the wiring up under my dash. 40 years of butchering and splicing and abandoned plugs. It is a MESS.
I'm curious to see what you are going to install for a radio?
There are some fairly good "retro" replacements available now.
I've even considered using an older Toyota cd unit (but its pretty hard to find something that doesn't eat disks!)

Yeah, thankfully this isn't too bad. Previous owners added driving lights, so there was some wiring for that, but they haven't cut off any factory plugs, luckily. Also, there is an LPG conversion, which will be removed.

There are also a few screw holes in the dash that have been added. I'll have to weld those up. I was planning on changing the color of the dash to gray anyway.

Not sure what I am doing with the radio yet. Did any of the 70 series (metal dash) ever get a double DIN radio?

The radio surround has also been butchered, so that will need replacing.

The doors will need work too, as they have been cut to fit the speakers instead of using spacers/door pods.

I often find the same connectors as Toyota used by looking at pic on Eastern Beaver.
Electrical Connectors page
Wow! Thanks for posting that, I opened it up and the connnector I have been looking for a long time pops up "Sumitomo DS 250", it's good to know it is a DS 250 5P. It is the tail light connector type on my Hilux, I have been wanting to add LED tail lights but didn't want to cut off the plug of the current lights just in case I had issues with the LEDS.

If I remember correctly the original radio/cassette player in my LJ78 was double DIN.

Yes.
I put turn signals in my Trail Tailor bumper since the swing-out pivots block the Toyota lights.
No need to cut factory wires. With the right plugs I can make splitters and pigtails.
There may be a vendor in Oz that sells the same connector once you know its name.
Eastern Beaver seems to be run by an American living in Japan.

I have this Double Din Panel for my LHD, but I believe it is ambidextrous PN 55413-90K00

Single also available, but I don't have the PN
