Hello. I am looking for a reverse trigger wire under the dash of the FJ62 or kick panels to automatically trigger my reverse camera in my new head unit. I have used the search function for this issue without success. Some have asked but there isn't a definitive answer that I can find. I know many use a manual switch but I want it to work automatically as designed. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Go to Google Images and search for wiring diagrams for your year of Land Cruiser. I found the ones I needed for '88, and they show that the reverse wiring goes from the neutral start switch (on the trans) to the taillights. I don't know where the NSS is (on the floor shifter or on the trans), but I assume the trans which would mean it doesn't come into the cab. So you may have to splice in underneath & bring a new wire (preferrably R/Bk) up for your camera system.

I thought the reversing cameras generally had a short wire on the camera end to splice into the reversing light as the trigger. I have done this in the past and it has worked as intended.

I just did this. The Kenwood I got had input jacks for the reverse camera and a wire for power from the head unit and another near the camera to run to a reserve light. But if you want to hook it up to come on whenever you want, there’s another set of inputs and a camera button on the head unit. I actually used that one for an extra front facing camera. It’s pretty cool but will give you vertigo if you watch too long.

I am doing this task this week, forgive the simple question as I have never run wires in the car long lengths before. And I need to connect our new head unit to the backup camera in the rear. Should I be routing the wires under the carpet inside the cabin towards the back or under the frame? And for just a pair of wires, do I need to loom them?

I appreciate any insight as I try to prevent doing the wiring three times before I get it right. @php74

Man, it’s been a while and unfortunately I sold my fj62. I ran the wires internally with the oem wires (tucked under carpet and trim on driver side) and remember that the wire going to the camera ran into the tailgate with the oem wiring through the sleeve w grommets at the bottom of the tailgate (you can only see it when the tailgate is open). I mounted the camera here (see pic). You could definitely run underneath in some flex conduit with extra precautions for moisture obviously. I think it’s a cleaner application inside tho personally. Good luck!
