When going from park to reverse, the back up lights flash on, but go off when in reverse.

I searched and it sounds like there is some sort of an adjustment possible and refers to the FSM.

I looked in the FSM, but could not find anything.

Can someone please provide instructions on how to perform this adjustment, or a page number in the FSM which addresses this?

Thanks

I had this problem as well. The adjustment needed is in the neutral safety switch. I don't have my manual with me but its the switch on the passenger side of the transmission. loosen the two small bolts and adjust it. The body of the switch can be adjusted. If I recall Correctly, you are supposed to adjust it with the transmission in neutral. I believe there is a line scribed into the shaft that lines up with a line on the switch. The neutral safety switch has the reverse light switch built into it. After adjustment and after your reverse lights work well, make sure you can still start it in P and N.

I just replaced by back up light bulbs with LEDs, so I tried checking them out, and my son told me they weren't working at all.
Turns out, I have this same problem. The white back-up lights will briefly flash as a shift from PARK into REVERSE, but then
the back-up light goes off. If I hold the shifter in between Park and Reverse, I can get the back-up light to stay on, but then
when I release the shifter, and it drops into reverse, the light goes out.

THis sounds like the solution. THANK YOU!! I'll dig out my FSM and try to fix this.

THanks.... sorry for reviving an old thread.. but that's what's so great about this forum. The YEARS AND YEARS of posts, and the VAST KNOWLEDGE stored in these posts and the brains of THOUSANDS of CRUISERHEADS!! Thanks all..

For @jmstu76 or anyone else who can respond....

The above quoted sounds promising. I'm scouring the FSM for some guidance on this procedure, but not finding it.

Are the "two small bolts" described above the ones kind of at the end of the arc piece? What moves where?

In the first photo of mine you can see that a rubber washer/grommet has torn loose. I doubt that's the problem, but probably worth replacing.

In the second photo what is that protrusion with the white cap on it? At first I thought there was a wire missing there, but there is none. It's just a little cap.

I finally found the info on this adjustment in the FSM on AT-13. At least visually, it appears as though the Groove and Neutral Basic Line on my switch are aligned as indicated. In the photo above, the shifter is in Park. When in Neutral, the references are aligned.

I guess I could be looking at a replacement. Hard to tell yet. It may take some searching with a volt meter.

Here is an aftermarket replacement for about $170. More Information for WVE/AIRTEX/WELLS 1S5472

Same part at AutoZone for a bit more money, but with limited lifetime warranty rather than 3yr/36K. https://www.autozone.com/batteries-...tch/duralast-neutral-safety-switch/190097_0_0

Okay, much progress made on this now. The Neutral Start Switch is fine. I have/had two things causing me to not be able to isolate the lack of back up light problem.

First, and most important, I couldn't find a fuse for the back-up lights. I got into the FSM electrical schematics and learned that it is on the wiper 20 amp fuse. I found that fuse blown, which has been a recurring problem. I just did work to eliminate the wipers as the cause last week, so I knew it wasn't that. When that wiper work was done, the washer (which is also on that fuse) was not connected. A couple of days ago I connected the washer motor and tried it. No go, but I didn't check the fuse, deciding to work on the washer later.

So, today I made sure that the washer motor was disconnected, replaced the 20 amp wiper fuse, and the backup lights worked...kind of. The shifter was wobbling enough to make them intermittent. Those shifter bushings haven't been replaced in many years. To my surprise, they are still available at the dealers (9038516008). $4 each. Will pick them up tomorrow. I bet that fixes my back up light problem.

I found this graphic on line...maybe came somewhere on this site.

I still have to figure out the washer short.

I modded my shift linkage about 10 years ago and posted a thread about it. You may want to consider going this route, since I found that even new OEM bushing have some slop to them.

You'll also need to adjust your shifter after taking it apart too. To do that, there's a bolt underneath the floor in the shift linkage. You shift into neutral, loosen the nut and bolt, and while having someone holding the shifter against the stop, tighten the nut and bolt again.

Might not hurt to try this before taking the shifter apart, just to be sure.

That is it exactly. Loosen the two bolts, rotate a degree or two, presto, lights on.
