Just did mine....

This is way old, but I thought I'd document what I just did. This was a FJ62. I took pictures if someone wants them.
Need 8mm, 10mm socket, #2 phillips, hammer, 2 small needle nose pliers and a small chisel/screwdriver
Retract antenna as much as it will allow.
Cut off antenna where it no longer goes into the mast.
Pull off the Washer-wiper container. Bottom two bolts just need to be loosened.
Use small pointed pliers/snap-ring pliers to unscrew the retaining nut above the rubber boot on the top of the front fender.
Unscrew the bolt that holds the antenna unit.
Unclip the power connector. Press hard from the outside of the car in to release the catch, and pull up.
Fish the unit out - be careful of the coax still attached - don't kink it.
Remove the small phillips that holds the band and the ground.
Slip the band up, then unscrew the twist-lock and slide the mast tube off the motor unit.
Be careful of the nylon washer and small rubber boot on the plastic push rod.
Don't lose them - they are small. Note the orientation of the boot.

Pull the two 10mm bolts off the mounting bracket, then unscrew the 8mm nut on the center of the round dog-bowl outer cover.
Pull the outer cover off. Be careful, the reel inside has two washers on the 8mm nut shaft, and the reel will just slide off and you will get dirt on the gears underneath if it comes off. Be sure to clean them if this happens or that plastic gear will wear.
Remove the 4 phillips screws on the inner reel, and pull the reel cover & attached nylon pushrod off (this will be discarded).
Push the new pushrod through the mast, nylon washer, and rubber boot.
Feed the pushrod into the motor base.
Bend the end of the pushrod (I used the holes in the reel cover) to kink it, then shove the pushrod unto the slot in the reel cover like the original to the stop.
Use the slotted screwdriver/chisel & hammer to bend the two indentions in the inside of the reel cover so it holds the pushrod in place. It should not budge when pulled. Failure to do this will result in an antenna that will extent, but not retract.
Put the reel cover back on the reel, and replace the 4 screws. Make sure you unscrew the screws until you hear/feel it click, so they go back into the original threads - otherwise, you will make new threads each time and several replacements later the threads will not hold.
Place the outer cover on, and hold it down with the 8mm nut/washer.
Replace the two bolts for the mounting bracket (they are shortest, with the crenellations).
Pull the power wire out of the side wall so the motor can be run in the engine compartment & attach the power.
Run the motor down enough that you can get the twistlock back on.
Push down & twist the mast tube, then attach the slip band and ground lead with the small machine screw.
Make sure the mast is twisted all the way, or the unit will not fit back in the side fender.
Run the motor down all the way, then disconnect the power lead.
Install the unit by placing the mast tube into the hole, and pushing it up against the fender until the mounting bolt will easily go in.
You may need mess with the angled tube at the top - it rotates.
Loosely attach the motor unit with the bolt (shorter than the washer bolts).
Put the boot on & hold it up while you tighten the nut (bottom of nut is inside boot)
Attach the power wire (feed wire back through the sidewall)
Tighten mounting bolt, replace the washer-wiper container.

Has anyone seen this video?

I am wondering if you can do this with an FJ62... anyone tried? Im not the most mechanically inclined and could use a lot of visuals. I know this is an old thread but Ill ask on Facebook too. Ill post something if I find out.

I finished replacing my antenna mast this morning. THANK YOU MUD for the wisdom of the Toyota collective...I have been thouroughly assimilated! So much, I might be rusting between my toes now...

I need to do this also bed to check and see if the mast is still available also need to check and see if the motor works mine is broke off at the first link I have the 62 for over 3 years with hardly any reception sucked driving from east coast to west coast and back.

This wiring set up and a ground lead that attached to the same bolt that grounds at the windshield wiper motor is controllable by my in cab antenna up/down switch.

I bet I replaced my antenna twice because I broke it by brushing branches. Take the advice and install a spring base or flexible antenna.
My 1990 62 radio has been terrible on AM since day one anyway (sadly). Static and electrical noise from the electrical system. I was never able to cure it. In weak signal areas (like where I live) it's hopeless.

For anyone having interest in this thread, I just repaired my power antenna in my FJ60.

Bought a "fix kit" from Toyota, original parts, part number is 86353-14330, ($45.18 at toyotapartsdeal), it includes the rod with the nylon cable and the drum with 4 screws.

Taking the antenna apart is not really straightforward but it can be done if you have taken apart stuff on your car before, maybe you'll need to put it together several times like i did but is a learning-by-mistake process since there are no tutorials or instructions around.

In my case the rod was broken, so I replaced it with the new rod, having the new drum was a plus, I cleaned and re-greased it and put it back on the truck. Works like it should now

Just a note of thanks on this thread! Replaced my mast last night relying heavily on the great write-up in this thread. Works great! I do get a "clicking" noise when I keep the button depressed when extending or retracting PAST the end point of the mast - but I think that's pretty normal. Sounds like the motor skips - and it seems like that's by design for this component. Much better reception which was a mandatory requirement for my daughters to run around town.

Hi all,

I tried replacing my antenna mast today and ran into a problem. After cutting the nylon cord I could not remove the mast from the cylindrical housing. It just gets stuck. What am I doing wrong?

I would be interested too, as my 62 antenna motor works fine but the mast is bent.

Where did you get a replacement mast?
Hello there . I dropped some pictures down of the replacement part for only the mast with the track wire. from Amayama
