vtcruiser,

$5500 may seem like a lot now, but in the long run, it is really nothing. I've found that these '60s go in spurts. I've put $5K in it one year and then only gas and oil for the next few years, and then another $5K.

The bottom line is that I've probably put $25K-$30K in my '60 over the past 14 years not including oil and gas, but it's still cheaper than any new SUV. What is that--$2K per year. I'll take it! The 2 biggest expenses have been engine rebuild, and body restore. Everything else seems to be a $500-$1000 dollar hit one a year.

This year Air Conditioning :)

Amen.

You just have to know that you're gonna be in it for the long haul. I had fits and spurts with the K-5. I am now into year 24 with a total of $20 invested. I'd say that pretty much beats all the odds. But I said when I started I would never sell.

Resale value b.s. aside, how long do you think the body will hold together? That's one thing we don't spend much time thinking about in sunny SoCal. I've got a zero-rust, good running 82/60 that just needs an exhaust gasket I'd let go for 3k. Got a few dents, but she's an AZ truck with not a single blister ANYWHERE. 8274 winch as well.

Ok...compression check showed all cylinders to be +_ 5 of 125 when cold. After running, #4 cylinder fills with antifreeze. I suspect a small crack in the head....the used head, that was magnafluxed, rebuilt, and retorqued after 500 miles. What luck!

At this point, I figure I am looking to buy a new used engine. If you have good leads on used 2F appropriate for a 60, I would be appreciative of the contact. Thanks for all the replies.

Bad luck. But it COULD be a head gasket - maybe. I had a cracked head of my 40 and had it welded. Never did trust the truck after that.

When my first cruiser pushed the daisies, I was in the same situation you are now. Plenty of white smoke coming out of the tail pipe. After several days of investigation, the root cause was a crack on the wall of cylinder #6, due to an overheating incident a few months before. The head was fine, the head gasket was ok. I truly hope it is the head, and not the block.

Just another perspective, don't want to be scaring you or anything.

Jose, let's hope it's the gasket LOL!!!!

VT..60, drop me a line...I know quite a few folks in VT who might be able to lend a hand!

I also have a friend here in maine that is seriously thinking of putting in a diesel conversion and his original 2F is in great shape and was rebuilt acouple years ago. I know he's going to want to sell it.

I too am having some 2F problems...well, it's not a 2F, it's a combo that bolts up but runns???? The 84 FJ60 lost the big end on a rod (@70mph!)...well, good head, bad block. I had a 71 F block...rebuilt both head & block, mated them together...wolla...a DOG!!! I have little power & only 11 mpg. Confirmed the problem w/ TLC Performance in Lancaster, OH (Jim Chenoweth - FJ40Jim@aol.com). Turns out to be a bad combo...only 6:1 compression! Thus the lack of power & poor gas millage.

This 60 was originally built(?) for my wife, who'd like to keep it. I'M LOOKING FOR A 2F BOTTOM END! AND I LIVE IN MAINE! (Houlton). I'd like to get in touch w/ your parde that has the 2F. I can be reached at alling@ainop.com or (207)532-4846.
