To all of you who were wondering or may have already done this, my new shaft is done. Problem was obviously the size of the original tube. Hit the pan and if bounced hard enough could leave you stranded with a blown trans. Went to the junk yard and got a front shaft from a 94 suburban. Had the ends swapped at the machine shop and boom! perfect. Hope this helps.
Cost: $325 machine shop
$30 junk yard shaft

A drop in the bucket of pig love.

Nice! I knew Tom Woods offered a narrow shaft, but didn't think about the junk yard. I'm getting old, used to know every inch in the yards and how I could use it.

I should also say that the suburban shaft is nearly 1/4 inch thick. It is a heavy shaft. The machinist was impressed when he cut it off.
