I am looking for my first FJ40 rig project.

Price needs to be under 6k. It also needs to run good, and the frame be in good shape. Some rust is to be expected, but I would like to use the rig while restoring it at my pace if possible.

I do not want any rig that does not have the 6 cylinder that came in these rigs (no v8's). I am open to any year, but of course prefer the late 70's models.

Im located in GA, and the closer the better. However, I am not opposed to having one shipped from far away.

Thanks!

Get something a close to rust-free as possible and pay the $800-1400 to ship something out of NV, AZ, NM, CA, etc. good luck!
Daniel

hey Daniel,

Now that you're in Germany, where are you keeping my old 1971?

Robert

We have some friends watching over her.... Sometimes even taking her out to take their kids to Dairy Queen like I did with my boys almost every Sunday. Hope all is well!

Welcome to 'mud! I just moved from Macon, now in Germany. Buy something out west. One, they're in much better, original shape. Two, more times than not, sellers from the southeast have their POS listed at triple their value.

Macon isn't too far from Bremen! Are you an Airman? I once was 20 year ago. I hear Germany is nice.

I will take your advice, as I have found many HIGH priced FJ's locally. Some are worth it (maybe..so it seems) and others are about 1 step away from taking the old dirt nap.
I have been scanning the CL in cities out west, and have found some much better deals. Just not easy buying something without actually seeing it, but seems that is what Im gonna have to do.

I appreciate those links btw.

Eric,
Buying out west is not as intimidating as it may seem. Find one you like, gets tons of pics from owner, negotiate a deal then find someone on mud or a local cruiser shop to inspect it. Aaron from Summit (here on mud) is the go to shipping guy. I worry about everything and I've done the above and would do it again.

Eric,

I'm actually Army. I was a recruiting company commander for central/western GA a couple years ago. My family stayed while I did an unaccompanied tour to Korea. Now, I'm in Germany. When I get done here, I'll have two years left. I plan on trying to get stationed somewhere in the FL panhandle (AF or Navy) with a joint assignment and then retire in that area.

Yes, buy something original and as rust-free as possible out west, pay for the shipping and still save in bodywork on the backside. I'm luck, I've never been burned and I've bought 8 out of 10 trucks that I've owned sight-unseen. Just establish communication with them, have them take photos, etc. Another huge plus would be if they're on mud.

Bottom line, there are deals out there... Be patient. If you see a great deal, jump on it.

Daniel

I appreciate the replies, but I went ahead and picked up a 72 yesterday. Needs some love, but has some great mods and parts on it now that drove me to buying it.
Has a 78 front axle, rear disc brake kit, SOA lift, rebuilt original motor, new wiring and harness, power steering,....plenty of body rot in the common places (rockers, floor pan, rear tub rail) plenty of misc parts including a 4spd trans and transfer case. It looks a little rough but not too bad 20 feet or so away, lol.
Paid more than intended, but I felt it has a lot of expensive items out of the way and is a good foundation to start with.

Eric--I'm in the same situation (budget, time, first FJ40). I'm going to trust these guys/gals and search a bit in the west. Good luck with your new rig!

Hi--I'm a noob and found this thread and am considering doing just what you describe (and am concerned about wiring money for a vehicle I haven't seen). How do I get in touch with Aaron?
How do I find members in 93238 zip region who might be willing to take a look-see for me?

Aaron's email:aaron@summitautotransport.com
You can go to the clubhouse section on this forum to find local members
Wiring money has a big trust factor. The Last rig I bought site unseen was from another mud member that was pretty well documented. He also sent me pics of everything I wanted to see.
I would recommend making your purchase contingent on an inspection. Lots of mud members are happy to take a look at a rig for you.

Hi--could you email pics or video to tomhrrtl@gmail.com please?
Is it late 1974?
