I just had a similar issue with my riding mower. Choke had to be partially engaged to keep the engine running. It has only run on "recreational" fuel so no ethanol. At idle I could get it to run with the choke off but as soon as I gave it any throttle it would die unless I added choke. I picked up some fuel system cleaner and added it to the tank. I ran it around the house to get the treated gas into the carb. It took a few days, sitting over night and runs around the yard and by the third day it fired and allowed the choke to be at full off and full throttle to be applied without stalling or dyeing.

If you circuits are being blocked by bad or old fuel deposits a chemical system cleaner may resolve your issue with requiring any disassembly.
