Aloha-
I have a 1964 FJ40 and I am looking to attach the Spare tire Carrier, I bought the rig with the carrier off and was wondering if someone could assist in letting me know bolt sizes and if there are extra parts that support the carrier being attached, etc. The area that the carrier attaches too on my FJ is probably not the strongest on the rig as you can see in pictures, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thank you

There should be reinforcement plates inside the tub. Are they still there? You are missing the bottom hinge that connects to the body (lower right hand corner like on the top in the upper right hand corner that is T shaped). Also looks like your are missing the clasp that locks the carrier in place so that it does not swing out - Lower left hand corner.

If you're not stuck on original, that reinforcement plate is one place I feel needed to be improved upon beyond the way Toyota engineered it. I put in a much sturdier inner brace when I replaced my rear quarters.

OEM tire size was much smaller (lighter) than what I've seen on trucks these days. You can see on your own rig how the weight damages the sheet metal. I built a similar piece out of 1/8" steel and my rear sill where the bottom hinge attaches I built out of 1/8" square tubing too.

I thought about a rear swing out to get the weight totally off the body, but I would need to save up for that. They way I have it, you'd have to look pretty close to know it wasn't original.

Another thing to consider: You have to adjust the tire mount on the swing out or it won't clear bigger tires. Most people (myself included) add some square tubing between the door and piece the wheel actually attaches to. You might have to shift it up as well depending on the tire you are trying to mount.

What kind of screws/bolts are used to attach the spare tire carrier hook and cusion to the body since there's no access behind those to put bolts on the other side?

Bumping this. Is there supposed to be a reinforcement plate for the lower hinge too?

Hello all, opening this back up.

I’ve got a question on the location of the holes for the spare tire carrier. I can get it close to where it should go based off of the latch location but I’m attaching this to a Aqualu aluminum tub and need to drill it out. Can anyone give me a decent measuring top to bottom and side to side from the tailgate opening?

I appreciate any help.

offer up the spare tire carrier latch location, and then make sure the carrier is level, and you should be able to mark the top and bottom holes from that.
this (post #119) was my recent fix on the original spare tire carrier.
