I was disappointed in the fj visability sucked, no intierior room ,engine seemed strong +,i went with the h3 roomier than fj cheaper price wise, dealer actually dealt with me un like toyota... and my h3 doesn't see that much of road any way light trails or dirt roads mainly... i still use my fj40..

Respectfully, I don't understand your reasoning here. I had seattime in both and the H3 felt MORE cramped than the FJC. (I am NOT a big guy).
The windshields, the same, the side windows of the H3 are TINY (both across and up/down). The interior architecture felt less open as well.
Toyota's 4.0L VVTi 1GR-FE, I feel, is the best in the class.

I think the H3 wins in the convienence factor b/c of the 4 doors.
It is nice to have a Toyota/H3 owner here so please post up more of your comments and impressions of the H3! I think it would make interesting discussion

I also looked at many different vehicles before narrowing down to the H3 and FJC. While I have no problem with people buying H3's, I LOVE this FJC. Mine is still stock and we wheel in it without problems. Been through some deep mud and up rutted out hills. Didn't think we'd make it but the truck never stops.

Some factors that tipped the scales towards the FJC without having taken it off road are: The price was about $8K less. The ride in the FJC was much nicer (wife was getting sea sick in the H3). The forums for the H3 didn't seem to have anyone wheeling in them that I could run with. The H3 was way underpowered (I was looking for a little pep in a new truck). The Toyota dealers were willing to deal about 10% where the GM guys would not budge.

I also spent about two years working on automation and control systems in the Shreveport, LA GM plant where the H3 is made. I have not been to the Toyota factory in Japan but have worked in Japan. I felt the quality and longevity would be better in the FJC.

Which ever you choose you should have fun wheeling. Good luck!

One thing its got going for it is the short wheel base combined with the weight. I like the 5,000 lbs factor.
My PW will go just about anywhere but lacks weight to keep ground contact.
And my 91 W250 Cummins has masive power but at 8,000 lbs it has a tendency to fall through the earths crust.

I think in general, a lighter weight vehicle is preferred, all other things being equal. It's probably not your power wagon's lack of weight that's the issue but its lack of articulation that keeps a tire in the air.

I havent really played with rocks much. More fire roads and cross country stuff. I think its good to have some weight, but not to much.

If you have to ask than get a H3

when people come to the town i live in (durango colo.) driving an h2/h3 etc, they rarelly leave without some sort of vandalism or rude gestures given to them...its not because they arre jelous by any means, itw just that when they go around boasting about that its a "hummer" and 4x4, etc, they make themselves look like idiots. Here is a link to an H3's awesome offroad capability...to anyone who actually takes there car offroad frequently this would hardly be considered an obsticle.

I think it would be beneficial to point to real differences and advantages you feel swayed your decision to buy the FJC.
I think that would help foxtrot6 and others that read this later.

well obviously the fact that one is made by GM and the other by Toyota, that should be enough rigght there.

Also I dont believe they come in anywhere close to the same category. The "hummer" isnt an offroad vehicle...The origional one yes but by no stretch of the imagination is the H2/H3.

I would take a J**P over a hummer any day if it had to come down to it.

I had awaited the new FJ since it was in the car and truck show. Before it arrived the H3 came out, and I gave it a test drive in Houston when I was visiting there. I wasn't impressed, even before the getting inside an FJ. The H3 was cramped, had very poor visibility all around, and a weird 5 cylinder engine. Not to mention PUSH BUTTON 4 wheel drive, a real turn off for me. I hate push button, or 'dial a terrain' 4 wheel drive selectors. Give me a real shifter and lockers thanks.

Toyota quality, not to mention real off road prowess, lots of interior room and loads of off road options at my fingertips (just order off the internet!) makes the FJ Cruiser the winner hands down. No contest H3.

Foxtrot6...

Welcome to the forums. My dad was in the Navy and I was born at an army hospital where he was stationed. I grew up in the miltary with all my other family members in the Marines. I then served my country in the USN and spent a number of years in.

I have zero issues with japanese vehicles although and when it comes to trucks either japanese or domestic I am biased towards the Toyota.

One thing I hope you comes to realise and appreciate is that the majority of the folks here are very fair minded with vast knowledge and experience on more then just Toyota's. Many of use have owned other 4x4's over the years and we bring that to the table. I have owned GMC, Chevy, Ford, Jeep, etc...
I have a strong preference for Land Cruisers. But that doesnt mean I wouldnt buy something other then a Cruiser.

Here I think you will receive a more well rounded opinion not seen on other forums that cater to one type of vehicle.

Foxtrot--

for me i would go with the FJ cruiser for toyota's reliability, the FJ does have some faults obviously like kinda crappy visability and im not a big fan of having only the 2 doors as im usualy the one that gets crammed in the back seat (youngest kid) while i cant say i know much about the hummers other than to stay away im not against domestic trucks...but unless its a full size ill always look for a toyota before i buy a domestic

the fj is good value for your cash - spend the left over cash on a off road trip with your honey ;)

A Push button transfer case  ohh sh#t thats not gonna fly.

Havent even looked at the H3 yet just seen them on the road. I think they are a sharp lookin truck. Kind of long. But it sounds around here like the guts are rotten.

My wife has an H3, it definitly is short on power but it wheels pretty well right off the lot. With the adventure package it has 33" tires and a rear locker, we got it in a few places I did not expect to get it out of but it performed well.
