I have wanted to do this too. What are you using for a softtop?

This looks great! You doing this as an off road machine or similar to factory finish?

Planning to factory finish minus running boards. Got some Stayfast canvas to build the soft top. Going for the what Toyota should have built look instead of the FJ Cruiser :)

Plz take many pics and post them. The roll bar looks great.
What is the plan for the canvas?
Snaps on the sides and tail gate or a rail like a Jeep top?
Are you going to use bows to keep the canvas top off the roll bar?

If you get stuck for mounting ideas, check out landrover soft top hardware and canvass construction.

I had three of these and used genuine soft tops on them all with no leaks. Very clever construction and mostly dust free too.

That is one way to get rid of the useless sunroof.

I like it.

More pictures second side going faster. Maybe building metal frame for glass side windows and covering. Thanks for the Land Rover tip.

With keeping the door frames intact should be water tight there at least. The roof is rolled on the edge to accept j clip molding sewn to the canvas. So that should be water tight, now it is framing the sides to make those water tight. Trying to build the whole top with no snaps. But the top is next on the list need to finish the passenger side nd build a taller tailgate.
Thanks for the positive comments.

I found a "project" HDJ81 a few years ago. I tried to convince :princess: that I would build her a convertible out of it. She kybosched the idea....
"There's NO way you are having a third Landcruiser!"

This is exactly what I would have done. Looking forward to watching your build.

Oh, and :flipoff2: Welcome to Mud. By the looks of it, these are your first posts?

Thanks, I have used the forum for a resource but thought people might want to see the convertible build. When I get stumped on something might post some questions.
Thanks again.

Very cool project!

Any plans for half doors later on?

I'm heading out your way this August for school, I'd love to see this thing when it's done!

Looks great!

I get down to Spokane about twice a year and would like to see it too. I'll send you a note when I go and if it works out it would be cool to drool.

Cheers,

John
