hello!
am getting this off of a freind and have been looking at this site for a couple of months now, its still going to be a little while before i can really start working on the piggy, i am thinking about a full frame off resto, not to stock, but as more of an expedition/tow vehicle.
i am also planning on dropping a diesel of some sorts into it, i know where i can get a diesel box truck locally, but am thinking about one out of an 84 4x4 suburban, the one i had had a 4.9l in it that got awesome milage. the 2 vehicles weighed about the same and i think (or hope) that i could use the trans and transfercase out of the sub as well.

its got some cancer, and some bodywork needing done, but the f engine runs pretty well from what ive heard of it, no smoke, no clanks etc.

the guy we got it from had swapped an 74 body on a 73 frame, ive got to get more pictures of it and start tearing it down soon.

if i can get the equipment together i think that i will try to repare the damaged body panels, and cut and paste as little as possible. then coat everthing with por 15 and am thinking about a olive drab lower and khaki upper paint scheme.

IT looks like a good start on an expedition rig. I like the diesel idea. Weighs as much as a Burb? Maybe less, Pigs are around 4400 lbs.. So.... been rooting around the site for a while have you?..guess I don't have to explain :flipoff2: then. Welcome! Have you checked out Hammas' build, Wow! huh, plenty of ideas there.

Welcome; if it has the 74 1 1/2 F engine that is in good shape; you have a great deal, that engine is the holy grail of the
f series:D

ok one thing i have not come accross is how to visually tell the differences between the f 1 1/2f and 2 f engines anyone have a link for that?

F 1/2 Engine

It's the F engine with the oil filter on the passenger side, I have one inn my 40. The transition was made in 1974 or so. If that is what you have it is a real good engine. However, I'm currently in the middle os a build-up/comversion of a V-8 into my 73 Pig. This is a great place for information. I haven't found anything yet that someone hasn't done or tried with these vehicles. Good Luck.:flipoff2:

f vs 2f

many LCs' have had engine swaps so the way to tell for sure is the oil filter thing as mentioned and the serial number. Look on the block back between the starter and the dizzy. If the oil filter is located on the passenger side and the motor serial number starts with a f instead of 2f well....then get down on your knees and worship before the icon of f engines. Why? more torque than the next years 2f, the better oiling system of a 2f, higher compresion than a f. You can put that head on a 2f block and go for a high comp. engine.

so if it like this:
mini-DSCN1463.jpg

its a 1 1/2f?

and a quick question the brake booster and master are shot, it came with an extra inside but i was wondering if i can put one out of a 84-89 hilux on there or if it didnt have enough oomph for the job?

Don't know about the swap but......might be a good idea to look into it, a rebuild kit could run as much as $400, nuts! I tell you. One thing you might try is to open the booster up, inspect, clean and relube, it might not be shot ya know. If you do crack her open, watch for the sping pressure! It isn't much but if you don't expect it it can suprise you. Sure looks like a f @ a 1/2 there feller been.

serial number on the engine starts with an f then like 542 number number shoulda wrote it down.. ok so ive got a rare engine nice lol...

i think im the only one with a 55 for a hundred or so miles. i want to make the outside pretty clean, and have the inside somewhat modern, im too tall for the stock bench in the front seat so buckets here i come lol.

im located in pekin il, just south of peoria il,
one of the reasons i first wanted a 55 was that i had never seen anything like it in person locally, and to me the 45's look too much like heeps..

ok, quick question
since i am not planning on keeping the engine that is in this truck now, does anyone know what this 1.5f is worth and the best place to sell it is?
thanks
Mike

keep the engine.........it is awsome; nothing against a swap personally but an f 1 1/2 has gone up to 400.00 miles + on this forum.....swaps cost a ton a money, time and labor:hillbilly: ask me how I know.........you can do an awfull lot of body/paint/ upholstery and still be able to drive it keeping the original motor as rsbcruiser poits out the rebuild can be inexpensive if you have to go that route......am getting around 14.5 mpg on my 74 and am looking at sticking in a Fairey or an h55 for even more.........my 0.02 :)

Yeah dude,

Keep the motor. You can do a lot to hop them up and squeeze some more power out of them. Its NOT worth it to swap engines. I put a 350 in my FJ60 once upon a time and wished I had spent that 2500 bucks on gears and lockers instead... if you go V8, you're gana miss the low end torque, I promise...

im planning on going with diesel so torque shouldnt be a problem :)
and the 14mpg doesnt sit to well with me either, my dd (ford ranger) gets 18 and thats really not all that great to me.

The guys running diesels in Aus. report up to 27mpg. Potential drawbacks. expect to spend $1000 more than planned. All of my swaps have proven this to be true. Expect to spend 100hrs more than planned. I have completed four swaps and these basic rules seem to apply. Diesels are also, hella expensive to rebuild. Do you have a target motor to install? With gaas prices these days, diesels are starting to make more sense.

ive had my eyes open for a 4.9l turbo model out of a 84 suburban, had on when i lived down in texas and it got 35-40mpg fairly consistantly
nice thing about diesels is that on many of them a rebuild consists of new rings valves and cylender(SP?) sleeves and bearings.
and if i add a propane injector to it from what ive been lead to believe it will increase performance and economy

 x 2 with rsbcruiser...Richie sounds like we read the same book........have also been involved in 4 engine swaps and reget them all..............a lot of time; a lot more money than I calculated and probably would have been better off doing an upgrade like an overdrive or a 5-6 speed tranny.......on the other hand a nice diesel is lovely and I salivate when I see cruiser_guys; exile's and rhino's; there are also some lovely SBCs conversions like Luke111s and Goebs; but having been there;............ they are ALL very expensive in time; labor and money; always a LOT more than I bargained for.....if it can be pulled off it will be an awsome rig........just my 0.02
