A pair of stock spec'd Alcan leaf springs have now been on my '85 truck for more than a month and several hundred miles. Ride has much improved and I think the 1/2" clearance between the shackle and frame made all the difference. Once the spring shackle has the frame riding on it, the small bumps become harsh and annoying. The cheapest way to improve the ride of old stock springs is to have a custom set of Sky's Boomerang shackles made. They offer 2" as standard but can do 1". Having tried a 2" set on the junk LCE springs, I re-drilled for 1" and got the truck pretty close to setting level. If the OEM spec'd Alcans springs sag over time, I'm ready.
I'll be adding photos soon.
