Hi All
I'm slowly winning the battle of the alternator.
After taking in all the advice from dedicated Mudders this is what I have done since the last post.
First changing the alternator to 120 amp sounded good at first but I have to stop thinking Old School.
Why do I need to charge the Camper batteries with the Toyota? I have a bank of solar cells mounted on the camper roof doing that job.
So with the camper now not in the equation all I need is a dual battery system.
Many years ago I had a dual battery system in my 1974 Forty Series . This system worked fine with 2 led acid batteries and a mechanical off / on switch.
So what has changed?
I removed the AGM battery and replaced it with a lead acid .
My voltage to the battery is now 13.5 volt up 1 volt on the AGM battery at 2000 rpm .Why ?
Next I removed the OEM voltage reg and replaced it with the Era after market voltage reg .
At idle I am now getting 13.5 volt and 14.8 volt at 2000 RPM.
I took the forty for a spin and the 14.8 volt was stable.
I now invested $500.00 in a Redarc DC to DC in vehicle charger . ( will Nat ever get her new kitchen? )
Using Anderson plugs I hook up the Redarc
to the start battery and then to the AGM battery.
I needed to see a customer at the Gold Coast 80 ks away so I took the Forty for a run ,the result being the AGM is now fully charged.
I now need to mount the AGM . Under the hood is full so that means I have to mount the aux battery in the cabin.
In travels I found a Thunder Box.
This battery pack is now fully moveable and I will fit only when required.
Tomorrow I will make the set up look pretty.
The removable battery pack lends it self for use in both the Forty Series and my Nissan.
Some more photos.
Cheers Peter
