Anyone know a good source to pick up a large first aid kit? The one our troop has is woefully old and in bad need of replacement, not restocking. I'm in need of one that will easily support a troop of 30-40 on any given campout. We have about 60 registered scouts in the troop.

I think Adventure Medical Kits are really nice. I have the Fundamentals kit and love it. The Comprehensive kit is a step up in size and capacity. I would recommend adding a stethoscope and BP cuff.

x2 re AMKs - really well put together kits.

The kit with the stethoscope and BP cuff is the Mountain Medic II http://www.adventuremedicalkits.com/kit_detail.asp?series=700&seriesNav=Dom&kit=700&kitNO=0100-0502

This would give the troup the comprehensive base. To that you can add the quantity of various items necessary to support a group of that size at any one time.

x3 Adventure Medial Kits. the REI kits are also pretty well put together. i've got some of each spread across the truck and the Action Packers. good assortment of necessities depending on environment and problem/emergency.

Thanks guys!

Any kit should contain Quickclot and a couple of tourniquets. These are the new lifesavers on the battlefield. Any car wreck is as bloody as a battle wound is. I also have curlex, maxipads and self sticking elastic wrap in my kit. If you are trained then you gotta have IV kits. Just my 2cents

remember...

you don't need enough for 40 people... just a enough for a few... you can't reasonably treat more than a couple people @ a time... if ya do need to, than whatever you have in one bag will never be enough... the big things to keep a lot of are bandaids, antiseptic solution of some kind, ace bandages & irrigation water & instant cold packs & heat packs for cold weather stuff... the other big stuff you'll only need a a little bit of... OK, maybe one tourniquet, and some other trauma dressings for one or 2 people... quick clot is a grey area... not on many civilian BLS/EMT or even Paramedic/ALS protocols, so if you are not trained (it's silly I know), you could get dinged for using it believe it or not... unless your using firearms & chains saws, I'd leave the quick clot out...beisdes, quick clot is a last measure after other basic bleeding control tactics...atleast where I work it is...pm me if ya still need some info on what to stock up with...

This is very sound advice. A good base AMK should be all you need for a Scouts - no need for some huge military battle kit. From this kit, I would then just add a big box if multi-size and shape elastic bandages ("bandaids") and maybe a 100 box of single use antiseptic wipes. That should cover 90% of the problems without having to "raid" the kit.

With kids, I tend to keep a real FAK for true emergencies and then a bunch of the stuff that treats all the usual small stuff.

Cheers, Hugh

As a Scout Troop, each Scout should be carrying his own personal first-aid kit for minor scrapes/cuts/splinters. What our Troop carries is a kit for more serious injuries. Ladder splints, larger bandages, stethoscope and BP cuffs, sting extractors, syrup of epicac and other OTCs that the Scouts are not supposed to carry.

One of our ASM is an instructor w/ the City/County rescue. He has acquired a carry case that was no longer being used by the rescue crew and has outfitted it w/ supplies very much like the AMK.

I would suggest approaching your local Fire/Rescue department to see if they can help acquire/supply your Troop kit. I haven't come across a Fire/Rescue crew yet who would not help out w/ a Troop need.
