Wasn't sure which forum to post this in since it's not vehicle specific. But what is everyone carrying as far as fire extinguishers? How are you carrying it, and does anyone have any specific recommendations for a vehicle specific extinguisher.

Right now I have an old 5 lb model strapped to the roll bar with exhaust clamps behind the drivers seat of my FJ40. Even though the gauge reads full, I'd like to replace it because I dont' know the exact age, but it's at least 5+ years old. The only reason I still use this one is because it has a metal mount with metal strap. All the new fire extinguishers I have use the cheap plastic mounts and straps, doesn't feel very comforting having a cheap piece of plastic holding a 5 lb missle behind my head. So are there any available with stronger mounts? I'm thinking of adding another one to the other side of the roll bar or right under the drivers seat.

I've heard horror stories about the dry chemical extinguishers and the problems it can cause, but the only other option seems to be halon at $120+ plus for a 5 B-C model, and supposedly they have limitations. Are they worth the extra expense? Anyone ever have to use it in a fire? Does anyone carry more than 1 in their vehicle? I've had to use one of those small extinguishers on a kitchen fire, so I know one 5lb models seems almost insignificant even against a small fire.

I have a 5lbs under the driver seat (no strap) and a 10lbs on the rear, it sits on the floor but rubber strapped against the wall panel.
There is a place where I got these cool rubber straps that are also used to hold axe and shovel to the roof rack but I dont recall the name of the company.

Both of my extinguishers have the metal housing.
The reason for that is that they get service on a yearly basis... So I get to practice with both of them right before getting them service....
This way I know they will work when and if I ever need them ( I hope I never do.)
Its mo' money but it sure gives yah piece of mind....

If your fire extinguishers have the plastic housing/nozzle the service company will not service them. Well at least that is what I have been told as they view them as a disposable units (one time use).

If yours is over a year old you should find out where you can get it service and practice putting a small fire... I have used gasoline and or white gas for camping....

What are some or the Horror stories?

Both my fire extinguishers are old, but from reputable brands. I have a Halon that is about 4"x16" tank size and a CO2 that is around 6"x20". Neither has shown signs of loosing pressure. The Halon is strapped down with quick release straps just above the floor under my knees for easy quick access. The CO2 is kept in back in my oil and parts tub. I should figure out a permanent mount for it by the tailgate.

I have used a chemical unit on my FJ40. Will never again unless forced to. Spend the extra money on Halon or equivalent. Money well spent IMO. Bigger the better but they do take up space.

Got any more details? What happened and what problem did the chemical unit cause?

What extinguisher do you use right now?

I had a fuel leak turn into an engine fire instantly on the HWY. At the time I did not carry an extinguisher. A HWY patrolman discharged his chemical unit in an attempt to put it out. The fire dept. hit it with the big hose eventually. Post fire corrosion was the main problem. It accelerated the rust. Then there was just the extra mess of clean up which I'm sure was a health hazard. The 40 has not been rebuilt since.

Amerex Halotron.

Well, a master stream'll do that, but we don't usually use'm on car fires. :p

I've been on fires that a basic consumer FE put out, those that an FE coulda put out, I've put out electrical fires w/a pressurized H2O can...

and then there's the rest. I've only had to pull the 1.75" line, even on a fully engulfed semi-tractor. Tires make a right nice sound when they get too hot...

Me, I carry a Wallyworld silver canister (rated for vehicles) under the front seat. Ounce of prevention n all that.
