Finally done with this project and got to get out and wheel my rig! It's been in the garage too long.......

Pretty pleased with how it turned out, really adds some balance to the rig and makes the rear suspension work. Doesn't seem to even be noticeable on the uphill sections, and it's like having someone stand on the bumper downhill. I'm figuring it weighs in the neighborhood of 120 pounds. Nice to finally have a spare!

Looks nice. Do you have a way to lock the tires and tools?

Yeah, just haven't got that part in yet. :) Shame you have to worry about that kind of stuff. the reality is, if anyone wants it bad enough, they can just unbolt the hinge pin and take the whole thing. It's just a 2,500 pound trailer axle end.

Nice--I was thinking about trying to make something like that but I use the 60 to haul lumber/drywall/bodies so much I didn't think I'd like having something swing from the rear. Might try a home-made safari rack tho. I'd like to steal fab ideas from yours on Tues for the tool holding gizmos & stuff...

That is one big tire, I have trouble moving around my 33's, those would be a burden...

Do you have any plans you can share, for us that would like to copy cat?

As usual with these things, my only plan is to have no plan. As I get older, it's getting easier to stop what I'm doing, go in for the night and sleep on things instead of ramroding through them. It's made all the difference in good decisions. :)

You're welcome to take a look and use any ideas you can. I don't mind at all if you would like to build yours the same. I am a little bit O.C.D. and follow my life with the "a place for everything, and everything in it's place" philosophy, so I was tired of looking in the back of the rig and having these tools rolling around loose. ( I have a container fetish too, lol)

Swinging the carrier out of the way is no problem on a 4runner, because you already dread having to roll down the "super slow, won't go all the way up if it's cold" power rear window anyway. This just gives me another reason to talk myself into reaching over the seat. I need to figure out a way to graft in an FJ80 rear gate and hatch, that would be sweet.

Ha ha. Yup, you are allowed to use my spare anytime Chuck.

P.S. I got the hinge and latch here: Tire Carrier Hinge and Latch [TC-HL] - $75.00 : EMS Offroad, Custom 4x4 Fabrications

Best deal I found online. Oh, and The empty real estate on the drivers side will soon be occupied by a removable system where I can either put a small cooler for when me and the family go wheeling, or two jerry cans for when we go on trips like Holy Cross and Trevor and Uncle Ben don't have any gas.........:D
