I'm sure there's a mix of oil and undercoating. Is there any particular spot in those photos that show severe rot?

Compare a photo of one I recently sold - rust free to the photo you posted. Look at the texture of the steel that has been painted over with whatever.

Don't know about a trap but I wouldn't give 4K for it and I would just wait.
