Must vent.

Last night while finishing up a DRL switch install on the 100 I realized I was about out of 1/4" wire loom for my pair of 18ga wires. No biggie, pick some up around town...

Just returned from advanced auto parts around the corner after learning that they stock 4 different styles of wire loom... 1 diameter (5/8") in, get this, 4 different colors. It also felt like cheap thin junk, not the same as what Digi-key sells. Obviously today's gear heads are mostly kiddos with vanity issues who like bright obnoxious wire looms. :bang::bang::bang:

I love the cruiser crowd where you can get any color you want on after market parts as long as it's black. Where if you shop civic parts or similar you can buy any crappy part in 5 or so bright colors.

OK, off to RS to see if they have multiple sizes instead of multiple colors...

No kidding. So lame.

Colored silicone hoses though...now were talking!

Gotta admit I went with blue when I replaced the rubber hoses in my 62. Though I guess having colored hose serves a purpose in that it's easy to locate if I'm chasing a potential vacuum leak....

Went to my neighborhood RS, girl didn't know what wire loom was so I located it myself.
1 size, 1/2" black, I told her of my wows and her response was that she would prefer "colors to like match like the color of the orange engine block in your classic chevy or something" :bang:

-Car Quest, 1/2" black only :bang:

Blue silicone hose is cool, as is red, but colored wire loom is clearly stupid. :D

Life it the first world is so hard sometimes...

Good luck with Radio Shack. Last time I was in one they had about 3' of shelf space for electrical stuff. The rest of the store was cell phones, cheap RC toys, and crappy overpriced PC's. They did have a nice selection of phone cords though.

Are phone cords still used? :p ;)
The average customer at RS is either younger than 25 or older than 65. So cheap RC cars and phone cords are big sellers for them. :flipoff2:
The over 65 crowd also buys digital TV converter boxes so they don't have to replace their Zenith console TV with the clicker remote.

Haha, and good luck getting an answer from the staff. Everytime I walk in and they ask if I need help, I tell them I'm headed for the "big set of drawers" in the back. Then they look relieved I don't ask them any questions about what is in inside :)

I like my wire loom UV safe black. That way I won't have any problems with it if the truck sits for a few months on it's roof. ;):hillbilly:

There is a reason I call them rat shack. I wonder how many years it has been since they sold a ham radio or terminal kit? Last kit I built from them was an H19 terminals. That was back in 1980.

 Sounds like me. I generally prefer the staff stays out of the way and lets me find my parts. The exception is the RS in Belgrade, MT. I actually enjoy talking to the owners, there.

I have a good electrical store here, too. No gadgets, just parts and tools. And I have a good relationship with the owner and his family because for the first year I was here, most of my parts requests were a combination of charades and pictionary since I didn't know any of the right words. :D

I got involved in CB radio in the early to mid 70's (before the craze) and all of us referred to it as Sh!t Shack even then.
Their house brand of audio equipment and CB's was referred to as the sound-alike name - "laugh-at-it" . ;)

Though they had some good stuff and were a valuable resource they thrived because often they were the only game in town.
