I searched and didn't see anything to my question...so to those of you with more knowledge than me...can you use the same external speaker for both a HAM and CB radio installation, or do I need to have two seperate speakers, one for each radio?

thanks for the feedback and input...My plan is to use the HAM more than the CB...so Dan your advice is well advised!

Get two speakers, a good one for the ham and something from radio shack for the CB. Multiplexing one speaker correctly will cost a lot more if you want to use both radios at once.

Fixed.

I mean, you could easily run the speaker wires through a DPDT switch.

Edit: Another solution would be to source an amplified single speaker with a stereo input and wire each radio to one channel with some inline resistors to get the gain right for the inputs.

Something like this. There are a lot of options.

To do it right you would need an audio mixer.

Never seen a speaker with more than a two wire connection. Are you implying that a 3 or 4 wire connection is needed?

I fixed the problem simply. I unplug the extension speaker from the 2M (where it normally resides) and plug it into the cb when forced to use that contraption.

The one I posted would have a stereo 1/8" jack, which has L, R and (-) connections (headphone plug).

If you're ok with that, you could find an A/B switch so you didn't have to plug and unplug. A DPDT toggle switch will do the trick as well.

They use the plug and socket, but are all of the contacts live? For instance my V8k's use the 3 contact socket, but the middle contact is from programing and cloning, not for sound.

Moving the plug btwn the two radios in the Xcab is an onerous chore of about 6" Fortunately it only happens, well twice in the last 10 years. All other vehicles have/will solve the problem by not having a cb.

Which would be included in a single speaker with a stereo input, which can be had for cheap.
Try that out and tell me how you like the sound when both radios are active at the same time.

If one did the switch I think the dual pole part of the suggestion would be very important. Switch both the + and the - of the speakers. I don't think that you want them common.

The issue that I see with the switch is that typically the socket contact for the center pin is itself a switch. With a plug in the socket it turns off the radio's own speaker. (I use this simple, light, & reliable "switch" on my RC cars.) So what that means is that if you're trying to monitor both radios at the same time you won't be able to do it w/o unplugging the one that the switch isn't selecting in order for it's speaker to work. Which leads to either a more complicated solution, or two remote speakers.

here's one version:
