so my dad just bought a 2000 100 series and anly has one key. my brother is a toyota tech and with the employee discount the key is still about $185. my question is where would the best place to get a key from. TIA

If you, for your secondary key...assuming that is what you want/need, the best deal is to use a Camry key blank. They are about $40 or so from CDan...or your brother. FYI: The Camry key does not have the remote buttons...but it is FAR more sturdy than the LC remote key.

what year camry are you talking about? and will that key be an immobilizer key?
what he means is, you will still be able to unlock the doors, glove box, start the car, drive it and do everything with the camry key.
The only downside is, you dont have the remote lock and unlock + panic buttons on your key. Im assuming the only real use for a camry key would be, say going somewhere often that you get soaking wet, you wont ruin the remote when the key gets submerged.

Or when you give it to your hunting partner and he looses it it isn't so $$$ painful
. The OEM LC remote key is a POS in my opinion...it's not IF it breaks but WHEN. Mine broke into a bunch of tiny pieces when we were at SnT when I was starting my LC. And since I had the Camry key along it was MUCH easier/better than trying to start the LC with the metal key stub attached to Vise Grips.
are the LX keys different then the LC keys?
I think I remember someone asking about this in a thread in the past several months...but I did a quick search and couldn't find it.
FYI: Per hoser there are two different keys for LX's...one early and one late model: Apparently '00(?) and after (not totally sure of the start date for the new shorter key) LX used a shorter key portion.

Both LX and LC keys seem to have the same weak remote portion but the blades differ. The LC blade is cut on the top and bottom. The LX is cut on the flat portion. Less wear from rubbing on other keys? Higher security?
well my LX has the longest blade. Was made December 1st 99 as a 2000 model. And the 05 LS430 key looks to be the shortest. My key has yet to break, but the iginition cylinder broke. Would have been over a 700 dollar job for some peice of pot metal. Thank god i had extended warranty.
Lots of 100 series keys are on ebay. I was just weeding through all LC items on ebay couple nights ago and it seemed like many were avail cheap and some had programming instructions (sometimes you need 2 to program or dealer has to do it)... Even if you get a cheap kep and pay the dealer to program you should still save $$$$........

I bought a key from ebay for $ 19.99 and got it cut from Home depot. I can do everything except starting the truck. The stater motor runs but never starts. Immobolizer....Complained to the ebay guy. He had no idea about the immobolizer but refunded the money quickly. I am still looking for reliable and cheap way to get a key
