I'm working with some cool software for work doing flow analysis, and what better to test it out than some truck stuff?

This first picture is a flow analysis of exhaust air going through a Dynamax type muffler with fiberglass fill outside the main exhaust tube. The flow travel through the pipe as I'd expect, but you do get a bit of the air bouncing around in the filled area... very low speeds in there as shown by the attached picture.

The maximum exhaust velocity coming through the muffler is calculated to be 450 inches/second. What does that mean? I'll compare it to that of a FlowMaster 50 series exhaust next.

Next I ran some studies on my existing FlowMaster 50 series muffler. This thing is really dang loud with the 22RE motor, especially in tight canyons that are found in the Southwest.

This whole idea started from my wife (and me to be honest) complaining about the resonance that the Flowmaster exhaust builds up when in the dual crawler box. 4wheeling is supposed to be a way to relax, but when your head is ready to explode from exhaust resonance, all you get is a headache.

Anyhow, this is what I'm running now. As the pictures show, the air spends a lot of time whirling around in the muffler at low speed. While I'm not even going to pretend to be an exhaust expert, I'd guess that's where a lot of the interior cab noise comes from.

The maximum air speed coming out of this Flowmaster exhaust is 175 inches/second - way slower that that of the more free-flowing type of exhaust looked at earlier.

Seeing that I'm sick of 4wd headaches, I'll be ordering one of these new mufflers in the next week or so. After I get it all welded in, I'll post back my thoughts on it.

Regardless, it's kind of cool to see how the air rolls around in the exhaust in our trucks...

Yeah any idea how they look inside? I'll look around for some pictures of one today...
