The PO of my 89 FJ62 installed a long-range gas tank (40 gal). He also installed an aftermarket exhaust system that snaked away from the side of the gas tank by about 1”. I’m installing a new exhaust system with brackets in the “original” positions. The exhaust pipe ends up running about 1/4” from the side of this large tank. Is this too close to the tank? If so, is there a heat shield/insulation wrap that I could wrap around the exhaust that would be effective? Thanks.

1/4" is not enough clearance, and I don't think there is any material that will be effective, that will be able to fit inside that gap.

Here's a tip that I've used before in situations like this: Exhaust pipes do not need to be round ;)

Thanks Lead Head! Makes mperfect sense. Only problem is that it happens immediately beyond where the pipe clamps (u-type) attach the splice for the joint. I had the vendor cut the pipe so that it would reduce the shipping charge. Otherwise, It would have been a single piece including muffler and exhaust pipe. Hind sight is great! I may try a muffler shop to see if they have a widget to pull it more away from the tank, including flattening it if possible. Thanks again, I appreciate the advice!
