I crushed my exhaust where it wraps under the frame. Total pancake! What a stupid design! So who make good exhaust systems for the 80 other than OEM? Any have them wrap over the frame? Fingers crossed...

I put a Borla exhaust on mine. Thats about all I have seen available, other than MAF. They had a 3" exhaust available a few years ago. Last time I spoke with them they were supposed to be coming out with another, but I havent seen it on there web site.

On the Borla, I have seen some posts regarding problems with the exhaust mounts not matching up very well. I ran into the same issue. I got the exhaust installed, but it took some 4 letter words to make it happen. After a couple of years, the mounts broke off. The good news is Borla has a 1 million mile warranty on their products, and my replacement exhaust shipped yesterday (guess what I'll be doing next weekend).

It follows the same exhaust path as the OEM. Be sure to get an exhaust gasket from CDan, the one that goes where the exhaust is connected behind the cats. And if you live an area with salt on the roads in the winter, check your exhaust mounts, the bolts on mine broke off due to rust. I will be replacing those next weekend as well when I install the replacement Borla.

The borla does sound better than the stock, but dont expect to see any noticeable performance improvements. It is also a little louder if that is any issue for you. Prior to the Borla, I could hear my blower, now I cant.

I think CDan has a Borla on his as well, you may want to PM him and get his thoughts.

hth,

oh yeah, the best price I found on the borla was at the link below, though you may want to look around if you decide to go it, I think I got for a little under $400 a couple of years ago. http://www.performanceproducts.com/...76&name=Borla+Stainless+Steel+Exhaust&type=20

Others have reported the same issues with Borlas not fitting proper, and breakig after being installed.

I have the MAF 3" cat-back ceramic-coated exhaust and it too is under the frame, I know some here have managed to make the over the frame work with 3" but IIRC they all allowed for this by lifting body lift an inch or so. I also know some here have managed to make the over the frame work with 2" or 2.5" but also managed to melt the carpet above that area!   For those two reasons I am absolutely happy with the under the frame approach except for the problem with what wrench noted. Here was my fix, easy enough to make, in fact, if anyone wants i will share the lengths and any angles that I calculated to come up with something that protects perfectly well, hangs as low as possible (no lower than the slee transfercase skid plate situated alongside), and also allows for some exhaust and engine movement without rattling. Ohh, I also heard that the MAF exhaust is indeed returning so it soon might be available again. HTH.

Wrench, to get it over the frame in your 96 with the cats inline you are going to have to be really creative. If you crawl under your truck and look closely you can see the "hump" in your floorpan that allowed the exhaust to be routed over the frame in those that had the cats side-by-side. So in order to use that you're going to have to go to one new cat like the MagnaFlow one or somehow revert back to a side-by-side setup but with before and after O2 sensor bungs. This won't be a problem if you don't have any state regulations restricting you use of an aftermarket cat. This is where CA makes it really tough. But if you stay with your original exhaust diameter and go with a single cat you can have a competent exhaust shop "correct" it and have it run over the frame. When I last checked the 49-state MagnaFlow/Carsound OBD-II compliant cat was under $80 while the CA (CARB) one was just under $200. Getting a new muffler along with the tubing should still put you under $400. Hope this helps and good luck.

Post a pic will ya!!!

turbocruiser,
Did the 3" MAF help with performance any? The guy that replaced my cat told me a 3" would be too big for (too much back pressure or something) for my engine. Not saying he is right, just wondering about your experience.

Also, I'm very envious of the lack of rust on your truck. :)

It sorta helped some, keep in mind my exhaust system prior to placing the MAF was essentially a straight short tube running between the frame rail and the rocker panel on the passenger side so not much freer flowing than that. I think the guy that told the thing about too much back pressure really meant too little back pressure - the larger the exhaust tubes, all other things totally equal, the less backpressure. Also keep in mind that the turbo tends to make minor mods to exhausts much more massive in terms of outcome. In other words, measured in percentage of output before and after the same exhaust on a regularly aspirated engine and a forced induction engine would show higher percentage improvements in most cases with the forced induction engine. HTH.

Turbocruiser I would like to make that skidplate. Can you give me the info on how to make it?

Sure, I can do this one of two ways, but I would want to ask the other folks on if anyone around would want the plans for the plate or if I should just PM wrench with dimensions and descriptions. If i do it here I can include pictures step by step which i cannot include via PM but if no one is interested I'll just PM wrench. Either way no harm no foul, just wanted to get an indication of interest. Thanks.

I am interested also.....lets see it!!!

Jeez Junky, he was just following your example, ...

ohh yea,

that's why you wrote "dumb thing to do" :D :flipoff2: :D

Fellas, please refer to the thread titled "per requests..." for the plans and pics on the skid plate thanks.

There are no parts available for your 1994 LAND CRUISER . You can select a different vehicle or search for a different product.

so, anyone have this? Where can I get the bends, or a drawing?

What's a good price on a custom Stainless exhaust?

I would not worry to much about "back pressure" on a cat back system

"back pressure" is a misnomer, there is a point where to large of an exhuast can slow the velocity of the expelled gasses reducing scavenging between the exhuast and intake strokes where both vavles are open, but keeping the stock mainfolds should be fine
