Engine uncontrollably revved to 5500 rpm's on startup???

So you never see the engine light, even at startup? Not good.

No, let me re-phrase that, the lights all do come on like check engine, oil, abs, a/t, etc, etc. Just no lights pop up under normal driving conditions. Thanks for all your help MoGas, I really do appreciate it!

That is the "good" ECU.

No, it's not.

89660-60220 is the early California spec ECU. Both it and the 89661-60170 are replaced by the 89661-60221.

(Not trying to Hyjack theMule's thread, but on topic)

Was this a recall Dan?

What kind of failures have you seen?

Do you get a CEL and a code, upon failure? (I did a couple of days ago 83, 84, 85, 21)

Are the 89661-60221 ECUs available?

Yes, 83,84,85 and a 21 or a 28 or both 21 and 28.

The 89661-60221 is available, they list for about 1,700 dollars.

Is there a source for the ECU......................on THIS planet?

Was the 89661-60221 put into any of the remaining 80s with the OBD I system (93-94 models)?

or was the replacement only available from Toyota later?

Used from 5-93 to 12-94.

I read Mule's response too fast. My bad.

Thank you very much Dan .

I'll put a man on-it.

And I am relieved that my 1 year old O2 sensor is not the cause of the code 21.

So, what's one to do? Could you get one out of a wrecked 80 then plug 'n play? You're right this was a California Cruiser. Do you know if this ECU could cause the problem I described? What other problems does it cause? Thanks for your help!
