I was at an idle starting my holiday shopping and without warning the 80 started to shake violently. I noticed several weeks back the exhaust sounding a little louder than normal. All gauges read normal but the engine light is on. The shaking occurrs at all speeds [including idle]. I was able to make the trip home [aproximately 30 miles] at normal speeds. Albeit acceleration is not normal due to the erratic behavior.

Any ideas?

I have 117k miles and had a full tune-up performed in August.

One simple thing that could explain it: Check spark plugs and spark plug wires. Spark plugs may be defective / not properly gapped/installed, and if you re-used the old spark plug wires, just moving them around sometimes makes brittle ones go bad.

Air intake hose?

I get this sometimes because I am missing the retaining clips for the wires on the dizzy cap, and every now and then one falls off...............

Okay, I know you guys don't want to say it, but it could be the HG. This is how mine went.

Not happy with the 30 mile trip if this is the case....that wouldn't be too good. Hope it's just your plugs or such...;p

I won't guess like the goobers above until you tell us what MIL code you're throwing.

Wow...not really:confused: I only posted it once, though it did take a long time to be accepted. Weird.

Thanks gentlemen. I did not see any abnormal readings from the gauges so I am hoping it is not the worse case scenario. I am going to have it looked at on Wednesday and report the results.

I had Dr. Gumby take a look at my vehicle. The expert pinpointed the problem. A spark plug [three month old OEM Toyota] plug went bad. After Gumby removed the ignition wire the engine actually stabilized. When the wire was completely removed from the ignition chamber the engine continued to shake. When removing the wire from the plug 50% of the way the engine ran normal. Gumby proceeded to take the bad plug and insert it into the other cylinder and yielded the same results. $1.95 [replace spark plug] and a little extra from Gumby provided considerable piece of mind.

This is the reason I grew more comfortable purchasing a Cruiser. Faith was restored in no time! This board rocks!

Plug was going to be my guess. I washed my engine once and a little water got past the plug cap and down onto the plug. My truck/motor shook violently and a CEL came on. I had no clue what it could be. Someone said that water had gotten into one of the plugs, so i pulled all the plugs, blew some compressed air down to dry them, cleaned the plugs and reinstalled. Shake was gone.

Plug looked fine. No hairline cracks, no carbon build-up, nothing. Sparked fine when not under compression. And it was only a few months old. Most of the time was spent double checking everything else given that there was no real evidence the plug was the culprit until we switched the plug to a different cylinder and the problem followed it.

Dr. Gumby

Gumby,

I like the name Dr. Gumby, it fits. Glad you could help out another Cruiser owner. Hey guys if your in his area, let him work on your Cruiser. He is the best, I know from personal experience. He checked my Cruiser out for me, and then he did lots of pm work for me. Merry Christmas to you and your family GUMBY. I love my Cruiser.

Todd,

Hey if your in the area I have plenty of Kansas Roosters for grilling. Got 14 on my last trip, and planning for one more trip in Jan.

I vote for the water in the plugs thingy.
