You think it was for the 120 series? Weren't the plans for the 100 series finalized in '93-94 while the 120 series launched in '03 maybe '99? Plus the only 120 series w/ the V8 is the GX470; all the overseas ones have the V6, I-4, or I-4 TD.
 
Between the frame rails, the two exhaust manifolds and the V8 engine, I think the simple reason is there just isn't much room to fit a starter to the side. They even had to use the less desirable log style exhaust manifold for space considerations rather than a collector style.

Yes they planned the newer V8 with the existing 120series in mind. GX470 and 4runner both have the 4.7L and if gas drops some more I expect the FJ will offer it. The GX already suffers a drop in HP from the even less optimal manifolds they have to use on the 120.
