tech-dog: OK, so yellow box speedometer correction; confusing as the thread was not related to speedo;s

The thread is about stalling and running rough and then mentions speedo issues. I was trying to provide info that speed signal issues can cause stalling and running rough.

@rhinocrunch : I was referring to the Trunnion bearings (top and bottom) that if broken can cause stiff steering, not the wheel bearings.
But then it should be more noticeable at low speeds IME.

A slipping gear behind the harmonic balancer that drives the power steering pump can cause loss of power steering; have you recently had the harmonic balancer off? If so did you torque the crank bolt to ~305 ft lbs?

Is the PS reservoir reading full when hot?
No I haven’t done anything much to the vehicle since I bought it a few months ago. Yes the PS reservoir reads full when hot. I’m going to flush the system tomorrow and see what difference it makes. Then probably get a new power steering pump and see if there is any difference.

These pumps almost never get bad enough to cause weak steering IME, but if you do dig into your pump, considering rebuilding the original pump instead of replacing. And if you get a new pump go OEM Toyota, the rebuilds often have problems.

FWIW when the steering was stiff on my 80 it turned out to be broken trunnion bearings. A few others had the same issue.

So maybe consider a front axle service (wheel bearings, trunnion bearings, axle seals, servicing the CV joints, etc) if you haven't had it apart yet.

Ok I’ll make sure to buy an OEM Toyota part thanks for letting me know.

Now is the car safe to drive? Or even ok to daily drive around town for the next week or so? There is a Land Cruiser 3rd party specialty shop which is about an hour and half down the interstate. Or can it get “even worse” and fail at anytime? I feel it’s gotten stiffer over time since I noticed it about 2-3 weeks ago. I’m not very knowledgeable with those sort of parts and problems.

The correct answer from a liability viewpoint is don't drive the vehicle if the steering isn't right, or getting worse.

Do the instruments show normal oil pressure?

Yes they do. It goes down at idle further than it did before I took it into the shop and had the throttle body cleaned but the average oil pressure while driving is still the same. I also replaced it with new power steering fluid and new Red ATF fluid as an experiment, and it’s still pretty stiff.

Does the reservoir have atf in it? Make sure it’s red atf and not power steering fluid. I’d check that first then report back
I’m not sure what it was. It was a very dark brown almost black color but I completely flushed the system and added red atf and now it’s a dark red. Steering wheel still feels stiff and like nothing changed.

Hey Everyone, just basically had the exact same problem for like the last 3 months on my 80 series Cruiser,

I had it in for service today just to see if the could find anything that could cause the whole low idling and stalling and close to stalling issues. Unfortunately they didn’t, and it was even worse after the service. So i luckily stumbled across this forum.

So I went to check if my Throttle body needs cleaning to hope that it would maybe fix the issue, but then came across a quite big hole/cut in my air intake hose (the one right after the air filter). Pictures attached.

So I temporarily fixed that and 2 smaller air hoses to see if it would help. And it sure did it idles better way better now and doesn’t stall anymore like it used too, especially after today.

Just wanted to add that just incase someone finds it helpful. And sorry for that long text. Good luck to anyone have the same or related issue.

Incredibly common issue. Usually one of the first suggestions on this forum with idle issues..

Intake hoses are available through Toyota.
Or online through partsouq.com, amayama.com etc if you don't want Toyota Australia to bend you over

If your mechanic missed that huge split, time for a new mechanic too.

I hope you go back to the dealer and do some "Land Cruiser Splaining" to the service manager and demand a refund.
