On my 71, it's the FD vacuum knob on the dash that switches the truck from 2H to 4WD, correct? And then the big handle under the dash switches it between 4H and 4L??

Thanks

Yes, of course if you have locking hubs you'll need to turn them from free to lock. You can actually run in 2low also. I believe the big vacuum tranfer knob pushed all the way in is High, middle position is definately nuetral, and pulled out is low.

Knob below the dash is vacuum for 4WD, marked FD. In is 2WD, out is 4WD. The handle with the black ball at the end under the dash is high push all the in, neutral mid way out and low all the way out. On the side of the handle is a pin the catches the flange on the back of the 4WD knob to put it in 4WD when in low range. That pin can be removed to use 2WD low. Keep in mind it was not intended to be used this way with the extra torque in low range going to just the rear axle.

So if the linkage wasn't hooked up at all but I had the transfer case in high then I could just use the FD to switch 2H to 4H and not use the handle under the dash at all? And of course locking the hubs
