Embarassing to ask this but got to

This is a rookie question but I am in it this far and want to make sure I get it right.

The side of the head gasket that has the most metal points up toward the head, and the side with no metal goes onto the block correct?

Had to buy a new head but everything is going back tomorrow and hopefully running by tomorrow night.

I iassume you mean the d shaped oil retun port with the copper insert? yeah. that goes up. and if you would have waited to ask this after you tried installing it, you would have realized that it only goes on one way.

Oh man!!! Ahh good stuff. Seriously, there's no stupid questions, only stupid people (who don't ask questions when they don't know something...) Glad you had the juevos to ask. And as Wristy pointed out, Toyota in all their wisdom made it so you can't install it wrong.... unless you're blind, in which case you shouldn't be working on an engine alone anyhow.

I got one from toyota and there is quite a bit of metal on the top of it. It is on the sides covering the water holes.

I was reading some more stuff and somebody says that it says in the FSM that you should put some gasket maker around the timing chain cover? Anybody heard of this.

yes. Jukelemon asked a Q about this the other day.
anywhere two ends of metal meet, you use FIPK there. such as on the corners of the upper side of the timimg cover to the head.

Thanks I will just lay the head gasket down and fill in any bare metal spots with the good stuff

where i just described would mean you apply the fipk on the underside of the gasket.

All right I think I am catching your drift on this one. There was some silicone in a horseshoe shape around the TC cover but not going in between the cylinder and the TC. Should I just redo this? didnt leak or hurt anything before.

if you want to redo where you found silicone, that will be fine. the idea is to not put too much on anywhere, so it dosent clog an oil passage
