I stumbled across this Hella 12volt electric vacuum pump for diesels - could allow running standard or bigger alternators, rather than the expensive OEM vacuum/alternator

Not bad, another option is to run Isuzu NPR alternators. Requires a small mod to the bracket. They are 70Amp, and with a vacuum pump cost about $110 on ebay.

I looked into an electric vacuum pump, found about 3-4 people and the general consensus was that they seemed to work for a couple
of years, and then started to have problems. This one also has a min temp of -25C, which could be a problem in Canada ( outside of Van., of
course!) But worth a look for sure.

Yeah I got rid of everything that required a vacuum pump and got a 70amp 24v alternator for my truck great mod. For me only had to enlarge the hole in the bracket 20 minut install got rid of voltage regulator and a couple of other things and a s*** load of wiring.

Not sure how new but they are very common. Running one on the L engine and it seems to be good. Lots of guys have started converting to them (diesel section). not sure if they are available in 24V but worth a closer look. Hell, you can buy 3 of them and still be cheaper than Toyota's one.

I used one of these on the BJ, worked flawlessly. They are designed for constant duty and I am sure many, many years of service, like a Swiss watch. They use these as the primary vacuum pump on electric cars and need to meet European safety standards. I still have one kicking around

on a note regarding 24 volt alternators, the only real difference is the voltage regulator. you can typicaly just change it and convert your 12v unit to 24v. you will also get the same current so say twice the power.
