Hi all,

I’m currently researching into both superchargers for my 2005 GX 470 w/205k miles. I planned to eventually move on to a LX570, but am very happy with mine especially after putting tons of mods on it. It’s my favorite vehicle I’ve ever had to the point if I ever have to, I’d get the lowest mileage/color I want GX470 and just transfer my mods to it.

I’ve read and watched videos with LX470s adding the elate roots style blower but am not seeing much material for our GX470s.

Have any of you added a sc and have insight?

Thanks all,

I don't think anyone on here has done one, although it certainly seems like it could be an awesome mod. You'd probably need to follow what's already been done for the LX470/100 series and be ready to improvise as needed....both engines are basically the same, but the GX has a bit different engine bay and air intake setup.

FYI, if you have not already done axle upgrades (regear with lockers), they comparable in cost to a SC (if not a bit cheaper), will give you some of the same acceleration upgrades, and will also make the rig more capable off-road (which a SC won't do). I went that route (8.2 swap with 4.56 gears) and have been pleasantly surprised with how well the GX moves and tows heavy loads.

XAT is supposed to be coming out with a supercharger kit and headers/full exhausts some time this year.

I thought I saw that Brockett Built will be making a SC kit as well. It might be worth waiting for more options to come out. In the meantime, I second the suggestion for a new rear end and rear locker first.

@Ismodar I just noticed the digital cluster. Are you getting a correct RPM reading? If so, mind sharing your software/version number? Even better if you have the update file! I've been testing things out on mine. Do any of the buttons on that steering wheel control the cluster? That steering wheel upgrade has been on my list for a while.

Hey! I’m still dabbling with it. I am in contact with the seller to send me a firmware update to fix the annoying seatbelt icon being on. The tachometer doesn’t appear to be working as well. I’ll update once resolved. So far, none of the steering wheel buttons function with the cluster unfortunately. It was a relatively cheap mod and is definitely “beefier”.

No way! I’ll definitely stay posted.

I think I found one who used the elate kit on the gxor fb group. The positive displacement style blower may be more ideal for the immediate torque down low.

I haven’t considered the rear 8.2 swap yet. I actually was having some slight issues with my rear passenger axle assembly and had it repaired 3x under warranty. Maybe I’ll go that upgrade route first since it’s a pricier one but very beneficial off-road.

4.56 gears help a ton with general acceleration/torque. Basically 20% more power at any given speed, and fuel mileage did not really change for me. I used a OEM trussed 8.2 housing from a Prado 120 that was ordered from Japan. A few other people on here have since done that swap. I picked up a 3rd member from a GX460, had ECGS build it, and re-used the axle shafts and all brake components from my 8" diff.

2UZ are known to have weak connecting rods.1UZ connection rods are much stronger. Need to upgrade that before putting on a supercharger to make work reliably. The reason TRD stop selling this in the first place.

The method I gave you did not work? I update the thread on this.

I'll check it out and try messing with it again next weekend. But when I go into the settings to turn off 1GR setting for the RPM's, nothing happens. It doesn't let me edit that setting. I think I need both a firmware file and Update file. I bought mine in Nov of 2024, when they just started selling them and my seller stopped replying back long ago.

I've also had good results with LT headers, a CAI, better exhaust, and a tune. The 2UZ-FE responds very well to old-school V8 hot-rodding tricks. In fact I can't say it ever "needs" more power, but if there was a easy/safe/cheap way to put a SC on it, it would certainly make it even more fun :).

If I were you, I would do headers, exhaust and gears before a supercharger. Good gains to be had and better dollar per HP ratio than a supercharger.

The urd supercharger is a turd, much less efficient than the elate kit and no intercooler. Basically a giant heat pump that takes a lot of power to drive. Search around on mud, one guy ran back to back dyno pulls on his URD and it made less power than stock on the 2nd pull. He then switched to an elate. Once the IAT's get above 130, the ecu will pull timing like crazy and all of the power gains go with it. And don't do a unichip, lots of people have bent rods on low boost with a unichip. The stock ECU is fine with 5-6psi with the elate kit and is safe at that boost and safer with a free flowing exhaust.

Being an 05, you have VVTI, which has quite a bit more power than non-VVTI. Regear for your tire size and do a full exhaust, I bet you will be amazed at the amount of power it picks up. Shorty headers and a proper exhaust on a non-VVTI 100 series are good for around 30hp/40ftlb, for the GX you can get mid length headers that are a bit better flowing. GX's are borderline in need or regearing on stock tires and it makes a huge difference in power.

i just finished my 8.2 upgrade. i did it very budget and left the 3.91 gears in and did notice a difference from the stock 3.73. i can only imagine how much the truck would wake up with 4.56. there is a thread with what i bought on the front page right now.
