Dusy Trail

Hello,
A couple weeks ago, I tried out my first ever hard core 4x4 trail called the Dusy Trail in California. We met some of the guys from this website, and now i am hooked, so next week we are going to go and try the trail again (along with Deer hunting), and try to get further through the trail, hopefully without breaking anything! Any tips?

I am taking my roomate, does that count? Along with Dirt bike, gas cans, Tools, extra parts, High lift jack, 2 Extra wheels and tires.

A FSM for your truck can be worth it's weight in gold. If you're solo (one truck) you might want to look into renting a sat phone in case of emergency... I'm going to move this to trails/events... Glad to have you on board!

Have you run through the whole thing? It's a hard trail and I would not do it alone, especially this time of year. Get 1 other rig to go, take cold weather gear, and have fun. It's kind of late in the season. If you get caught by a big snow dump, it could be a major problem.

I've seen lots of broken trucks up there so be careful.

Hey, I remember you guys

IMO, minimum for a wheelin trip is 3 rigs....as you saw with our group, having enough hands, parts, and experience for repairs is essential. Now, obviously, hunting changes your focus but not the results if you break. Weather now will only be worse from the light snow we got then....so be prepared for the driving change and camping needs too....

I have not run the whole trail, yet...so unsure how much more or less difficult it gets after Thompson hill...the three of us were breezing along easily, but have over 50 years of combined wheeling experience and all do it professionally...

Wait til late spring or early summer, I'll do it with ya

Good luck with that. It doesn't usually open until July. If you want to run it with our little band of goofballs, we'll be running it in early August. You can pay me back my Rubicon shirt then.

How far back into the trail is Thompson lake? Anyone ever fished it? Looking for trout.

From the south, Thompson Lake is a full day of travel. It's 2 days from the north end. There are trout.

Getting to Thompson Lake is a significant effort. My vote-wait until next year. Besides, doesn't the forest service close the gate Nov1? It hasn't snowed much yet this year, so maybe it's still doable. Call the ranger station in Prather. They are very helpful about the trail and the current condition.

School me on which end is the north or south. We come from the dam side, and start the trail, I assume that is the South end?

also, are there any other trails around the same are as the Dusy Trail? I dont have a locker and am very afraid of something going wrong. 2 weeks ago when we did "part" of the trail, we ended up driving the dried up lake bed of the Courtright Resvoir. Dont get me wrong the lakebed was a blast, but we got out of that trail with no breakdowns. We got lucky. When we got to chicken rock, we jumped out onto the lakebed and drove that all the way to the back of the lake to a Valley, and then we hunted that valley. Anyway, just wondering if there any other trails.
